Query / Question :
The screwed drain connections into the bodies of the pump check valves are leaking in operation. The system is fully
butt welded and flanges are rated at 600#. It appears the system may be subject to pressures in excess of design
pressure.
Please advise if: (a) current operating conditions will allow retention of the screwed nipple with seal welding, or (b) if
installation of a butt welded fitting, i.e. weldolet, is required.
Note that the valve body and nipple materials can be readily welded with currently qualified welding procedures, however
all seal welding of threaded connections must fully cover all threads to comply with code requirements. In either event
for (a) or (b) the drain assembly must be disassembled for cleaning prior to welding, completed welds will be subject
to NDT and hydrotesting of the valve with the internals removed is mandatory.
