PEC – C
Lesson Plan in Math Grade 8

I. Objectives

At the end of 50-minute lesson, the learner will be able to:

A. Plot the given points (Coordinates) on the Cartesian

coordinate plane
B. Determine the coordinates of the given point in the
Cartesian plane
C. Draw a coordinate plane in the given examples

II. Subject Matter

The Rectangular Coordinate System

Reference: Strengthening Mathematics by N.Vasquez, F. Buiza,
K.Tan , E.Pascua pp118-123
Materials: Graphing Paper, Charts, Strips of paper

III. Procedure

A. Drill

Cartesian Coordinate System (Axes, Origin, Quadrants)

B. Motivation

Let the students sing a certain action of either (Greenwich,

KFC, or Jollibee)
Ask the Students:
-Who among you here went to Greenwich? KFC,
Jollibee?
(Expected someone raise their hands)
-in Zamboanga, where do Greenwich, KFC,
Jollibee Located?
(possible answer for Greenwich, is at KCC,
Southway & Camins, & Jollibee at KCC, Southway,
Gateway, Camins, Tetuan, Citimall & OK Dept
Store). Teacher asked: Why do you think; it is
important to know their location? Location can be
fun if we plot.

C. Presentation

Today, we will learn more about plotting points. I have

a map and I want to find my dog. (Teacher shows a
map with a cut out dog picture & some buildings) I want
to ask a person if he/she sees my dog? (Teacher ask
a student to find the dog, expected answer is the
student will tell how many trees up to how many street
lights across the street.)

D. Discussion

A. As seen on the map, the horizontal figures as

represented by streetlights, and will be the x-axis

and the distance of the point or the streetlights from

the origin measured along the x-axis is the “x-

coordinate or abscissa” Ref.pp119.

B. As seen on the map, the vertical figures;

represented by the trees will be y-axis and the
distance of the point from the origin measures along
“y-axis is the y-coordinate or ordinate” Ref.pp119
C. Coordinate of the point, ordered pair that
represents a point.

Example: Graph each point: A(2,3) B.(-3,1) C(0,-4)

D(5,0) Ref.pp120 The A(2,3) ordered pair [(x,y)]

x-coordinate ; y-coordinate

To plot point in the Cartesian plane.

A.) Let’s determine the Quadrant where the

point belongs
B.) Locate the x-coordinate on the x-axis then
the y-coordinate on the y-axis
C.) Finally let us put a dot at the point where
these lines intersect

Example: Let’s plot the following points on the plane

with the given coordinates

a. A(2,3) b. B(-3,1) c. C(0,-4) d. D(5,0)

(Teacher ask): If you connect all points accordingly,

what geometric figure will you form? (possible answer
prism)
Tip! An ordered pair is so called because the order in
which the numbers are written is important. For
example, (2,4) & (4,2) are different.

Note: That the signs of the coordinate of a point tell us

in which quadrants the point lines Q1 (+,+), Q2(-,+),
Q3(-,-), and Q4(+,-). Ref.pp121

To determine the coordinates of a given point; start in

the point of origin then move either left or right of the
origin (along with the x-axis) depending on the location
of the point and lastly move either upward or
downward.

Example: Using the accompanying graph, determine

the coordinate of points P,Q, & S Ref.pp121.

E. Application (By Group)

Instruction: Plot the following point on the

Cartesian plane and connect the points according to
see the picture behind. The first group that can answer
correctly will have 10 points added to your participation

P (0,5); O (2,3); L (4,3); Y (2,1); N (4,2); O (0, -1); M (-

4, -2); I (-2,1); A (-4,3); L (-2,3)

(Answer the picture is a star)

F. Generalization

- Let the student draw their own plane?

(on the rectangular coordinate system) the student
can draw and plot and ordered pair on the proper
quadrant.
- How to determine the coordinates of a given point
on the plane? (the student can determine the
coordinates based on the x-coordinate or the
abscissa, while the second coordinate is called y-
coordinate on the ordinate. The 2 coordinates are
given is an ordered pair (x,y)
- Do you think plotting points and determine
coordinates important? Why? How? (The students
can relate and apply and appreciate to describe the
location on same as how we apply on the google
maps or on how mapping works. With longitude and
latitude as applied similar on rectangular
coordinate.

IV. Evaluation

I. Plot each point;

A(2,5) B(-4,3) C(-4,-1) D(2,-5) E(0,-1)
F(-3,0) G(1,3) H(2, -3) I(4,0) J(0,5)

II. Determine the coordinate of points A to J on the Cartesian

Coordinate plane.
III. Without plotting determine the quadrant or axis in which
each point is located.

A(-3,3) B(5,2) C(0,4) D(-2/3,0)

E(-2,-1) F(2/7,3) G(1.2,0) H(0,-5)
I(3.5,-4) J(0,0)

V. Assignment

Answer mathematic problems on page 123 only letter

B; (1-5) ; C: 2( a-c).
Reflection Paper

Teaching Reflection

When I first thought about student teaching, I went through many

emotions. It started with excitement because that meant I was that much

closer to graduating. I had so many questions running through my mind.

What will my teachers be like? Will the faculty be supportive? With all these

questions, I started to feel intimidated by what was soon to come. I was

worried that my teachers and I would not get along. I was terrified that my

students would not understand me. What was I going to do if I was not able

to be the kind of teacher I had hoped I would be? When the time came for

me to begin my student teaching, all I could do was hope and pray that

things went smoothly. I soon found out that any worries I had were no longer

an issue. I was placed at a school that was filled with caring and supportive

people. If I had a question, they had an answer. If they did not know, they

found someone who did. Even the teachers that I had no contact with were

there to make me feel comfortable and respected. My cooperating teachers

sat down with me and helped me reflect on how I was doing. I was expecting

to get along with my students and my cooperating teachers, but my

experience went above and beyond any expectations, I had in the

beginning. I learned more than ever imagined I would! I have come to

realize I could not have had a better student teaching experience than the

one I had at ILS WMSU School. My first and last placement was in a grade

eight-unit.

I really struggled, how to deliver the topic easily in my math lessons.

Math is an area that a lot of students do not enjoy. This is why the lessons

need to have a wonderful hook! My class didn’t really struggle with

coordinates Finding coordinate pairs was a concept that just did not make

sense. I decided that I needed to plan a creative and fun activity for my class

to get them interested in coordinates. I had them make pictures out of

pattern block cut-outs but apparently, my co-demo teacher forgot to

introduce so, I gave my students a sheet of graphing paper and followed

my coordinate pairs. After the picture was complete, they counted the

number of each of the different shapes they used. They then added up the

total number of pieces. From this, they created a polygon out of the

coordinate pairs. We discussed how all those coordinate pairs in the

Cartesian plane. My students loved this activity and also grasped the

concept. I need to learn to incorporate more of these types of activities in

my teaching. Even though there are areas that I need to improve upon,

there are areas that I excelled in during my student teaching. One of these

areas is that I am an effective communicator. I made it a point to make sure

that each of my students understood my directions or the topic we were

discussing. In addition to being an effective communicator, I feel that I am

a wonderful leader and professional. I always portrayed a positive learning

environment for my students. I was very enthusiastic and wanted my

students to feel comfortable in my classroom. Throughout my student

teaching experience, I learned things about myself that will allow me to be

a more successful teacher. The area in which I saw the greatest gain was

self-confidence. Deep down I knew that I was capable of becoming a

wonderful teacher, but part of me was not sure other people would see me

in the same light. Because of the wonderful teachers that worked with me,

I now know for a fact I will be a wonderful teacher. As I stated previously, I

had the best student teaching experience imaginable. I had a wonderful

support system of my professor Dr Mely Jane and math teacher Nancy at

WMSU ILS, along with superb cooperating PEC classmates. I learned how

to better run my classroom, and make my students comfortable. Teaching

is unlike any other profession. Teachers are constantly learning how to

improve their skills. For every student you encounter, you will learn

something from them. Whether it be a new teaching strategy or a life lesson,

you never stop learning. I am more excited about teaching after my fabulous

experience at WMSU ILS. Student Teaching Experience Reflection Over

the past day and my first and last and I hope it would not be the last of

course; my educational philosophy has evolved and strengthened. My belief

that schools should nurture the whole child was reinforced just as my belief

that teachers have an unimaginable influence over their students was. I

have witnessed the care that teachers and administrators show towards

each and every student at high school or even elementary school. The

importance placed on each individual student was refreshing and

sometimes overwhelming. This is something that I respect and admire

about the staff at Campus. They work tirelessly to reach all learners, even

if this means spending extra time brainstorming ways to do so,

differentiating for students, or spending extra time, outside of class, with

students. My classroom management style will most definitely evolve

throughout time. I will adapt my style to fit that of my cooperating teacher’s.

I know that when I have a classroom of my own, I will have an additional set

of responsibilities that student teaching may not have fully prepared me for.

The changing environment of this job is something that excites me and I

know that I will always be learning and growing as a professional, instructor,

mentor, facilitator and more. One particular thing that I did not have full

responsibility of as a student teacher is the placement of my students into

their math class for next year to come. This is a task that can be tricky, and

until I am fully responsible for doing so, I will not know exactly what is like.

This being said, I feel that I was prepared as best as I could be in order to

complete this task in the future. I feel very blessed to have demo-teaching
in WMSU ILS for my student teaching experience. More specifically, I am

fortunate to have been paired with my cooperating teacher ma’am Beng,

worked with the other classmates soon to be teachers on PEC program,

and therefore had the privilege to teach a wonderful group of 8th graders

over the past days. As I wrap-up my student teaching, I am shocked at how

fast this time went, thrilled to be this much closer to being a “real” teacher,

and grateful for every experience that prepared me for a classroom of my

own. I believe an effective teacher will not have formed only a good mind

to their students but also a good heart.
