AUGUST AND ANNA HEFEL GREVE
Anna Hefel was known as “Annie”. Her real name could have been Anastasia as she was listed as Stasia on
her son, Joseph’s birth certificate. Anastasia was a Blaser Family name. She was the oldest daughter of Joseph and
Anna Marie (Blaser) Hefel. Annie was a quiet person who was “well thought of”. Her life centered on caring for her
family and doing all the things that the typical mother did at the time. Anna married August “Gus” Greve on May 1,
1900 at the Holy Cross Church. The Rev. Thomas McCarthy performed the marriage. The witnesses were Philip
Reichmann and Kathryn Hefel. After their marriage Annie and Gus rented a farm in Buena Vista Township. Gus
was an industrious immigrant from Kiel, Germany. Kiel is in the northern part of Germany near the Baltic Sea. He
was born September 12, 1873 to Karl and Dorthea (Dose) Greve. Gus immigrated to the United States in 1890. He
made his declaration of intent to become a US citizen on October 14, 1902 in Dubuque County. Gus was a Lutheran
and knew the Bible from A to Z. His daughter-in-law, Anna Greve relates that Gus was a serious person who “never
listened to anyone except his wife”. Other sources say that Gus used “colorful language”.
Gus and Anna farmed in Clayton County for about ten years. They along with sons Joseph and Ralph left
Clayton County and relocated to Pipestone, Minnesota. The Greves lived in Minnesota for about two years from
1910 to 1912. Many immigrants to the United States were lured to Minnesota in the early days to work on the
railroads. Anna and Gus returned to Iowa, as they were fearful of the tornadoes that struck in that area at the time
they lived in Minnesota. Their daughter, Irene was born during their time in Pipestone. By 1913, Anna and Gus
returned to Iowa. They purchased 200 acres of land in section twenty-nine of Buena Vista Township in Clayton
County. They purchased the land for $11,000.00 from Fred W. Link. This farm was located on the “Hefel Ridge.”
At a later time, they left Buena Vista Township and bought a ninety acre farm in East Dubuque, Illinois near St.
Mary’s Church. This property was later developed into the Lacoma Golf Course. After retiring from farming, Gus
worked at the Carr Adams Company in Dubuque. They lived at 2053 Schiller Avenue in Dubuque. By 1945, he was
employed at the Metz Manufacturing Company and they moved to 711 Rhomberg Avenue.
August Greve died April 18, 1948 of metastatic cancer at the family home on Rhomberg Avenue. Anna
died of coronary heart disease at the age of seventy-seven years at Xavier Hospital on May 29, 1950. They are both
buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Gus and Anna had three children. Joseph the oldest was born in North Buena Vista. He married Anna
Jaeger. They had a large family, six boys and five girls. Joseph and Anna rented a farm at Turkey River and later
lived in North Buena Vista. Joseph loved horses. Ralph the second son was also born in North Buena Vista. He
remained a bachelor until age sixty when he married Grace Finsel. They lived on Davis Avenue in Dubuque. Ralph
owned the North End Shoe Repair Shop on Central Avenue in Dubuque for many years. Ralph was known for his
unenthusiastic demeanor when customers brought their shoes to him for repair. Despite this, Ralph always had the
shoes repaired and ready for the customers on the following day.
Irene the youngest child was born in Pipestone, Minnesota. Irene was a industrious serious person like her
father. She worked at the former Dubuque Packing Company and lived on Bluff Street in Dubuque. Irene married
Alphonse Schmitz in 1936. They had one son, Marvin. They lived at 711 Rhomberg, which had previously been the
Greve Family Home. Alphonse worked at the Caradco Company in Dubuque. Irene married John Burgmaier, after
the death of Alphonse.

The Jaeger home was most beautifully and appropriately decorated for the occasion.
The bride is a young lady, who is held in high esteem by all in this community, and she possesses all the
necessary qualifications to preside over a home of her own. She will make a loving wife for the man of her choice.
The groom is an industrious and trust worthy man or most excellent habits, and has won the respect of all
who know him. He is well worthy of his chosen bride.
Mr. and Mrs. Greve expect to make their home in North Buena Vista, and best wishes of countless friends

Greve-Schmitz
Miss Irene M. Greve became the bride of Alphonse G. Schmitz at St. Mary’s Catholic church in East
Dubuque Saturday morning, the Rev. C. Volt officiating at the nuptial high mass and the marriage ceremony.
The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Greve of East Dubuque, while the bridegroom is the
only son of Mrs. Mary and the late Frank Schmitz of 2647 Washington street, Dubuque.
Miss A. Cornelius played the wedding march from Lohengrin as the bridal party advanced to the alter.
The bride was gowned in a princess model of ivory satin trimmed in lace with a long train. Clusters of
pearls ornamented the square neckline. Rows of buttons also trimmed the fitted sleeves which extended in points
over the wrists. A satin braid formed the three-tiered halo of the veil which was edged in rose point lace and fell in a
long veil. Tiny calia lillies were clustered at each side of the lace cap.
The bridal bouquet was lilies and mums. Her only ornament was a gold chain and cross gift of the
bridegroom.
The bridesmaid, Miss Adellae Schmitz, sister of the bridegroom wore a princess model of peach
Mousseline de sole trimmed in green with sandals and gloves of the same shade. She wore a large picture hat of
peach shade, and she carried peach gladioll tied with a green tulle bow.
Mr. Ralph Greve, brother of the bride, served as bestman.
Dinner was served at the home of the bride in East Dubuque to 35 guests. Peach and white decorations
were used and a bowl of cut flowers was in the center of the table place between pink tapers in crystal holders.
The bride wore a black Moire taffeta dress with black hat and slippers to match when she and Mr. Schmitz
left on an eastern wedding trip. They will be at home to their friends at 2920 Washington street after Sept. 15.
The bride attended Holy Ghost school and Bayless Business college and is employed at the Adams
company here. The bridegroom is employed at the Carr-Ryder and Adams company plant.
