Eligibility
[The candidates, who wish to pursue Civil Engineering, should have passed
Higher Secondary Board Exam from a recognized board in India with Science -
Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with 50 percent]
C
andidates keen on taking up B.Tech Civil Engineering course in IITs and
NITs, should have scored at least 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics, Chem-
istry in combination at 10+2. Thereafter, the eligible candidates are expected
to qualify JEE Main examination conducted by Central Board of Secondary
Education (CBSE) annually. Regional institutes may have their respective state-lev-
el examinations for admitting students to civil engineering. Those who qualify JEE
(Advanced) can seek admission in IITs.
After completing B.Tech/BE, candidates can opt for M.Tech/MS in various spe-
cializations. For M.Tech degree course, candidates are selected on the basis of
GATE score. However, candidates with exceptional performance in their qualifying
degree may be offered direct admission in few institutes. There are several engi-
neering colleges in India that offer M.Tech programmes in Civil Engineering with
different specializations.

[Buildings come to one’s mind when one speaks of this domain. But Civil
Engineering has a much wider relevance]
T
he discipline of Civil Engineering deals with various aspects of planning, de-
signing, construction, maintenance and modification of physical structures
and naturally built environment. The discipline covers varied aspects rang-
ing from geotechnical engineering to structural engineering, environmental
to material, forensic to hydrology.
Civil Engineering is considered as the single largest branch among all the engi-
neering branches. It is the also the second oldest discipline after military engineer-
ing.
Civil Engineering makes use of scientific principles to solve the given problems
of a society; like residential, commercial, industrial and public works projects of all
sizes and levels of construction. Another name of Civil Engineering is Construction
Engineering. Structures such as tunnels, dams, sewers, bridges, highways, canals,
industrial plants, residential buildings, railway lines, airports etc. also come under
the category of civil engineering.
In general, the course would include from basic to in depth theoretical study to
field work like the fundamental principles to study the behaviour of solids, fluids,
soils, surveying and Environmental Engineering. Moreover, the course also focus-
es on understanding the complete construction industry, technical management
& leadership aspects of professional construction management. The curriculum
includes subjects such as construction planning scheduling and control, project
formulation and appraisal, shoring, scaffolding and formwork, quantitative tech-
niques in management, construction project management, project safety manage-
ment, advanced construction techniques and contract laws & regulation.

domains]
Job prospects
India needs technology revolution in the country. In this regard, the industry
requires huge numbers of engineers to tap the untapped spaces domestically and
overseas. Since India’s construction sector is forecast to grow at 7 – 8% each year
over the next decade, the industry is seeking to spread its wings in every corner of
the country. The industry has an increased international penetration besides meet-
ing the advancing domestic demands.
“While institutes try to attract recruiters to your campus, the ultimate responsi-
bility for ensuring you get a job is yours,” advises Shantanu Paul, MD and CEO of
Talentsprint.
He further suggests some ways to enhance skills that can help a student in
finding a job easily- writing a blog, taking on a project, working as an intern at a
company or taking courses improving technology skills or a certification that is rec-
ognized by the industry.
Therefore, there is a rising demand of potential civil engineers to fill these gaps
having vast potential. Since the industrial expansion is phenomenal, civil engineer-
ing is seen as a promising career option among the young aspirants.

The industry offers multiple roles for skilled professionals. Some of the job roles
are as follows:
l Research, Planning, designing, management of structure
l Construction, installation, and modification of structure
l Rectifying issues and problems using scientific principles/fundamentals
l Execution/implementation, operation of the defined plan
l Monitoring developments and assessing options
l Synchronizing work with other engineers
Industry insights
As the world rises to meet the great infrastructure challenge of the next decade,
what roles would engineering and construction companies play?
will inevitably give it a higher priority – or face a drastic change in lifestyles for their
people
l Worldwide expected cost for infrastructure over the next forty years is
approximately US $70 trillion
l Engineering and construction companies are changing to meet the growing
demands of infrastructure, from traditional general engineering providers to large
diversified businesses with specialized skills
l New infrastructure projects are expected to be on a huge scale, particularly in
emerging markets such as India, China and Brazil, so size and global reach will
also matter
l The shape of the industry is changing; the country is set to undergo a boost in
The bottom line is, the country needs more infrastructures; engineering and
construction companies are poised to capitalize on this opportunity, and to take a
leadership role in shaping infrastructure for generations to come.
