Budapest, presented by Tibor Pinter
“Ht-online: approaches and possibilities of informatics in modern
lexicography.”

EMLex In-Depth Module V1

1. What kind of dictionary does Pintér talk about? It is called “HT online”. What
does the acronym HT mean?
HT stands for hataron tuli which in Hungarian means “transborder” or “cross-border” as Mr.
Pinter prefers. The main aim of this dictionary is to provide an online basis for the main Commented [Majo1]: background of compiling dictionaries
online
monolingual dictionaries compiled in Hungarian. The dictionary includes varieties such as the
regional standards of the Hungarian language spoken as minority languages in Slovakia,
Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria. These varieties represent contact
varieties and the representation of the majority language differs in each region. This work
contains direct loanwords and is a corpus-based dictionary with several types of examples.
2. What kind of lexical items does the HT online dictionary include? Commented [Majo2]: weitere Schlüsselbegriffe:
interactive Database
The dictionary contains lexical units used only by the Hungarians who live outside of their
home country.
3. Who are the target users?
It is a monolingual dictionary designated primarily for the Hungarians living outside Hungary.
Besides that, it can be useful for linguists (in making comparative lexicographic studies and
also for codifying purposes) as well as language users (as a dictionary of foreign
terms/everyday words/contemporary Hungarian or as an interactive online database.
4. What are the advantages in compiling online dictionaries?
Pinter points out that the fact that this dictionary is compiled online serves it good because the
range of examples which can be used during the process of compilation is much longer than
in the cases of a “traditional” dictionary compilation.
It can also be developed by several members at the same time from different locations.
Besides that, the entries can be redone on-the-fly and immediately. Also, there are several
additional pieces of information which can be added to the entry such as images, several types
of examples etc. Commented [Majo3]: cross references, hypertexten

5. What does the speaker mean with “relaxed compilation”?

First of all, the whole process of compilation is fully computerized (the usage of computer
and internet for the process of compilation. It also includes a SQL-based database with a PHP
interface, and this enables that each new entry has the same structure. In addition to
previously stated, the entries can be compiled online with a user-friendly interface. Editors
have the possibility to edit whatever entry they want, but usually, edit the entries they created Commented [Majo4]: to access
themselves. An additional characteristic of this kind of compilation is that the edited parts can
be seen on the website immediately.
Moreover, since this type of compilation is done by several members, it is important to 1)
who does what and when, and 2) to revise previous versions in case they lack quality. That
being said, it can be stated that each entry in this dictionary “lives” since the whole history of
the entry is saved and it also can be changed anytime. What is more, all previous versions can
be set back or revised.
Editors can also add notes to the entries as a helping tool which is later revised and discussed. Commented [Majo5]: Ein Hinweis auf die kollaborative
Lexikographie wäre gut gewesen.
Additionally, the emails on the server can be sent immediately since there is a drop-down
menu where one can select a specific editor and send him/her an email.
It is important to stress that this kind of compilation is also comfortable for the users because
of the numerous search functions and because the logs of the searches are mapped and stored
(this might also be useful for the research purposes).
The dictionary is also edited all the time which means that it is never finished and which
includes also revising the old entries from time to time.
The basic info-communication techniques are based on relational databases. Both SQL and
XML are used during the compilation where the XML is extremely good regarding the
content and formal revision and also visualization (it can be changed quickly and notes and Commented [Majo6]: aber das eigentliche Ziel ist es nicht, ein

comments can be added easily). Besides that, network editing is done using the internet and
the real power of this work is that several dictionaries can be “printed” and saved within
minutes.
6. What are the outcomes and further possibilities of this kind of compilation?
In this regard, Pinter speaks about “easy to edit and revise methods”, the fact that it is easy to
create lists/dictionaries, that there are no limitations in length, that it has enhanced searching
facilities, adjustable GUI, and on-demand developments in the structure and IT-background.
Finally, everything used for the compilation of this dictionary, such as its interface, for
example, can be improved in the future which might produce an even better-functioning
method of compilation. Commented [Majo7]: ok

Die Aufgabe ist gut. Vielen Dank!
