Lesson Plan in Mathematics VI

I. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
A. Content Standard
Demonstrate understanding of rate and speed, and of area and surface
area of plane and solid/space figures.

B. Performance Standard
Able to apply knowledge of speed, area and surface area of plane and
solid/space figures in mathematical problems and real-life situations

C. Learning Competencies
Derives a formula for finding the surface area of cones (M6ME-IIIi,-92)

II. Content/Subject Matter

A. Skill: Deriving a Formula for Finding the Surface Area of Cone
B. References: K-12 Grade VI Curriculum Guide pp.280, TG 21st Century Mathletes
pp. 108-112, Learners Materials 21st Century Mathletes VI pp.277-278.
C. Materials: flashcards, ant cards and powerpoint presentation
D. Strategy: Explicit teaching and collaboration
E. Value Focus: Accuracy

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill
Solving for areas of plane figures

2. Review
a. What is the formula in finding the surface area of cylinder? Pyramid?
b. Give example for each figure and have pupils solve it.

3. Motivation
Teacher will show pictures of an ice cream cone and tell the pupils that this is
a space figure.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Introduction
One Saturday morning, my friend visited me. She brought with her ma
cone of ice cream. The base of the ice cream cone measure 3 cm and the
height is 4 cm. What do you think is the surface area of the ice cream cone?

2. Modeling
Surface area of cone
Let us use a net to help see how the formula for the surface area of a
cone is derived.

S
C = 2πr

r=

cone
The surface area of a cone is the sum of the lateral area of its base.

To find the lateral area, imagine cutting the lateral surface into wedges to
form a figure like a parallelogram.

Example: Find the surface area of the ice 2 cm

cream cone at the right.
Use π = 3.14
6 cm

Solution:

Step 1: Find the lateral area using the formula L.A = πrs

L.A = πrs
L.A = 3.14(2)(6)
L.A = 37.68 cm2

Step 2: Find the surface area. Use S.A. = L.A + B

S.A = L.A + B
S.A = πrs + πr2
S.A = 37.68 + 3.14 (22)
S.A = 37.68 + 3.14 (4)
S.A = 37.68 + 12.56
S.A.= 50.24 cm2
