CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

Research Method

The researchers used descriptive method of research in this study.

Descriptive research designs help provide answers to the question of who, what,

when, where, and how associated with a particular research problem. (Anastas,

2008). That it cannot answer conclusively in the question why. Descriptive

research is use to obtain information concerning the current status of the

phenomena and to describe “what exist” with respect to the variables or

conditions in a situation. The researchers used questionnaire to gather the data

needed.

Population and Sampling

The 69 Interns of Rogationist College High School Department, S.Y 2017-

2018 are the target population of this research being the respondents of the

study. At the same time, they will benefit from this research by letting the SABV

formators know the effects homesickness to the interns’ test anxiety and for them

to cope up with their distress in it. The researchers made use of the purposive

sampling as a method in choosing the respondents.

The researchers utilized this sampling technique because the RCHS

Interns are the appropriate students which are already recognized as one group.
The researchers have not used any formula because of purposive sampling

which intended sample respondents will be the same as the total population of

the RCHS Interns

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study are the interns of the Rogationist College

High School Department, S.Y 2017-2018 who are all experiencing to live in the

Saint Anthony’s Boys Village rather than to their home. There will be 69 Interns

as the respondents. The High School Interns are appropriate and capable

enough to answer the questions sincerely and accurately.

Year level Population Sample Percentage

Grade 7 15 15 21.74%
Grade 8 13 13 18.84%
Grade 9 8 8 11.59%
Grade 10 8 8 11.59%
Grade 11 14 14 20.29%
Grade 12 11 11 15.94%
Total 69 69 100%

Table 3.1 The table above shows that the total population is the same as the

number of sample.
Research Instruments

A questionnaire is a means of eliciting the feelings, beliefs, experiences,

perceptions, or attitudes of some sample of individuals (Key, 2009). The

researchers made questionnaire by means of modified adapted questionnaire

with the guide of some related studies and literatures. The questionnaire consists

of 20 questions which were related to the effects of homesickness to one’s test

anxiety. Likert scale was used in this questionnaire to determine if the

respondents agrees or disagrees in a statement. The questionnaire are divided

into three categories. These are homesickness, test anxiety, and the correlation

of the two variables.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in SABV Rogationist College, High School

Department, Km 52 Aguinaldo Highway, Lalaan 2, Silang, Cavite from June 2017

to March 2018.

Validation of Instrument

The process of approving a new program, or allowing an existing program

to continue, is describe as validation (Fraser, 2007). The questionnaire made by

the researchers went under validation considering the following the steps: (a) the

researchers collected reference about homesickness and test anxiety. (b) The
researchers forwarded the questionnaire to their Basic Research teacher, Mrs.

Pilita Belardo for comments and suggestions.

The instrument was submitted to a committee of four, Mrs. Marites

Yayong, Mrs. Pilita Belardo, Ms. Genevie Flores, and Ms. Cherry Barbaza.

Afterwards the instrument was improved by the researchers as per suggestions

and comments of the three committees and was resubmitted for approval.

Data Gathering Procedure

To know the effects of homesickness to the test anxiety of Rogationist

College Interns High School Department S.Y 2017- 2018, data were gathered

through the questionnaire made by the researchers. After the teacher approved

the questionnaire, these were distributed to all the RCHS Interns. The

respondents were given enough time to answer the questionnaire and then the

researchers collected it after all the Interns in each grade level finished

answering it.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

This section gives a brief description of the statistical instrument that was

used in this study. To present and interpret the data of the study, frequency,

mean, were used to determine the effects of homesickness to the test anxiety of

the Rogationist College Interns High School Department evaluated.

Frequency and Percentage. These usually refer to the number of

times the characteristics present in the study. In getting the frequency, the

researchers counted the data results manually. The researchers use this kind of

formula in interpreting the data gathered and to determine results through the

proportions of the responses. This was used to represent the percentage of the

frequency g

f
P= n
x 100

Where:

P = Percentage

f = Frequency

N = Total

Mean. This commonly refers to the average that is used to derive the central

tendency of the data in the question. It was used to measure the variation of

sample to sample.

x=
∑x
N

Where:

∑x = the sum of all data values

n = the number of data items

x = the average or the mean
