Though I had heard Des Cartes’s opinion concerning 119r

the being of a God often questioned by Sober Men and noe
enemies to his name. Yet I suspended my judgement of
him till lately setting my self to examine his proof of a God I
found that by it Senseless matter might be the first Eternall
being and cause of all things as well as an immateriall
intelligent Spirit. This joyned to his shutting out the
Consideration of finall Causes out of his philosophie and his
labouring to invalidate all other proofs of a God but his own,
