Technological Development: Reshaping the legal fraternity

ABSTRACT

Technology as a concept tells about the techniques, skills and processes used in the
production of goods and services. The pattern of evolution in technology can be referred as
technological development. In present times technology has significantly affected the legal
industry, mostly in a positive way. From the very beginning, legal industry suffered from
several loop holes because of which the culprits escaped from the chains of justice, but now
the same is being checked by the involvement of modern technologies, helping the legal
industry.

Technology proved to be a savior for the legal industry as it totally revolutionized the work
ethics in the field. Because of the innovative technologies there were large-scale
developments in the field like lawyer-client telecommunication chambers, use of block chain
techs (for legal data management), modernized courtrooms (equipped with cameras, legal
databases etc.), legal Chatbots or robots, legal artificial intelligence, various case law and
research depositories like SCC online, LexisNexis etc., cloud computing technologies, DNA
testing to find out criminals and many more.

Many scholars and critiques believed that technology proved to be a boon for the legal
industry but there are some dissenting opinions as well, some counsels and solicitors say that
these technologies require lot of capital and expertise to be installed and utilized respectively,
some believe that these technologies are highly vulnerable to hackers and coders, thus one’s
personal details are open to them, many attorneys don’t want to accept these modern techs as
they don’t want to change the settled practices and customs of the field. But if we analyze
both the connotations of the issue in question, the positive stand surpasses the entire stigma
against it as the old practices are not much productive and needs to be rectified properly.
