Anodizing Process

 Anodizing

▪ Anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts the metal surface into a decorative, durable, corrosion-
resistant. This process is typically used on niobium, titanium, and aluminum.

▪ The purpose of anodizing is to form a layer of aluminum oxide that will protect the aluminum beneath it.

Decorative : Serving to make something look more attractive

Durable : Existing for a long time.

Corrosion-resistant : Can withstand damage caused by oxidization or other chemical reactions.

Anodizing Process

 Anodizing Process for Aluminum

Aluminum is immersed in a tank containing an electrolyte having a 15%
sulfuric acid concentration. Electric current is passed through the electrolyte and the aluminum is made the
anode in this electrolytic cell; aluminum sheet is the cathode. Voltage applied across the anode and cathode
causes negatively charged anions to migrate to the anode where the oxygen in the anions combines with the
aluminum to form aluminum oxide (Al2O3).

 Types of Anodizing

▪ Type-I : Chromic Acid Anodizing

▪ Type-II : Sulphuric Acid Anodizing

▪ Type-III : Sulphuric Acid Hard coat Anodizing

Anodizing Process

 Type-I : Chromic Acid Anodizing

▪ In this type of Anodization we use electrolytic solution as Chromic Acid

▪ Wall Thickness produced will be 0.5 μm to 18 μm (0.00002" to 0.0007")

 Advantages of Chromic Acid Anodizing

▪ Used for parts having tight tolerances.

Anodizing Process

 Type-II : Sulphuric Acid Anodizing

▪ In this type of Anodization we use electrolytic solution as Sulphuric Acid

▪ Wall Thickness produced will be 1.8 μm to 25 μm (0.00007" to 0.001")

 Advantages of Sulphuric Acid Anodizing

▪ Increases durability, corrosion resistance when compared to Type I

Anodizing Process

 Type-III : Sulphuric Acid Hard coat Anodizing

▪ In this type of Anodization we use electrolytic solution as Sulphuric Acid

▪ Wall Thickness produced will be more than 25 μm (0.001")

 Advantages of Sulphuric Acid Hard coat Anodizing

▪ Increases durability, corrosion resistance when compared to Type I

▪ Resistant to marine and atmospheric corrosion
