1.0 OBJETIVE

Clearly identify the chemical cleaning process of the IHI boiler U2 at Cochrane Project, in
Mejillones.

2.0 SCOPE

The scope of this Instruction PE-LNLQ-ZN-22, is to establish the specifics items of the pre-
operational chemical cleaning of the IHI boiler U2 at Cochrane Project.

4.0 TERMINOLOGY

4.1 Operational pre cleaning: clean to remove waste deposits of process of


manufacture of materials and construction of the boiler. The amount and type of
deposits is assumed from statistics.

4.2 Operational cleaning: clean to remove deposits accumulated during the


operation of the boiler. The amount and type of deposit is determined through
analysis of representative samples

4.3 Flushing: Movement of water in open, intended to low dirt and deposits not
bonded circuit.

4.4 Heating stage: Destinated of to reach the proper temperature metals boiler /
preboiler to be able to receive solutions hot.

4.5 Alkaline stage: normally the first step to remove the deposits organic source
using alkaline solutions.

4.6 Acid stage: (pickled) to remove deposits using inorganic source solutions acid with
corrosion inhibitor

4.7 Neutralization - Pasivation stage: to form a thin layer of oxide stable for a short
time in pickled metal surfaces, to protect against oxidation

established in the P&ID .

5.0 INTRODUCTION

5.1 The required Cleaning Service, aims to achieve a removal of pollutants such as
oxides, dust, sand, grease and debris that remain inside the unit after assembly of
the equipment.

5.2 The removal of these unwanted elements will ensure a smooth implementation of
the units, and longer life of components, especially rotatives.

6.0 PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES

6.1 Check the task organization.

6.2 Boiler approved hydrostatic test, rinsed, empty, isolated, sealed and ready to receive
hot solutions.

6.3 Must be insulated Dome, lines, downcomers and the largest area of the boiler.

6.4 Verify minimum assurance demi 500 m3 of water, to be used in cleaning.


Parameters of demin water according whit demin water plant Cochrane project.

6.5 Check the drainage system of the boiler and auxiliary line connected to the pool for
reception of the effluents.

6.6 Cyclone separators and demister of the dome will be cleaned in place.

6.7 Verify lock and / or removal of instruments and valves with sacrifice disc or blind.

6.8 Circulation flue closed, to minimize unwanted heat loss.

6.9 Chemical assay verification for control of chemical cleaning in each of its stages.

6.10 Verify the existence of operational and contingency procedures applicable to the
work of chemical cleaning.

6.11 Verify the installation of witness tube in the chemical cleaning circuit and
corrosion coupon inside the Dome. Posco will provide sample tube to use as a
witness.

6.12 Auxiliary Boiler and operators, with current certification.

6.13 The pipeline and ancillary facilities should be completed.

6.14 All permanent drainage lines must have at least one valve operation to isolate and /
or block.

6.15 The control valves, check valves to interfere in the process, orifice plates, filters
must have been removed.
6.16 The effluent receiving system must be operational and installation of piping to Posco
pool must be done.

6.17 Verify operability of demineralized water supply in the area of Nexxo pumps.

6.18 Auxiliary connections as pre-engineering Nexxo completed and tested, including the
recirculation pump and steam line from Nexxo auxiliary boiler.

6.19 Verification of tanks and chemicals injection pumps on parapets.

6.20 Verification of auxiliary level installation, sampler in dome, witness tube and
corrosion coupon.

6.21 Check operation of Nexxo pumps.

6.26 The Nexxo auxiliary boiler and heat exchangers, recirculation pumps, must be in
place and connected to auxiliary equipment.

6.27 Before the start of the process, places near the lines to be heated, should be
marked with signs indicating the restriction of entry into the area, and valves with
labels.
6.28 All the lines are subjected to temperatures which are not properly insulated, should
be clearly labeled as risky and retired personnel from the nearby area.

7.1 FLUSHING AND HEATING STAGE

7.1.1 It is considered from all the auxiliary circuit valves and boiler Posco closed.

7.1.2. With the boiler empty, coordinate with Posco, the start of the filling with water from the
demi plant.
Open valves: HAD32-AA401/402, HAD31-AA401/402, HAD33-AA401/402, HAD34-AA401/402,
,HAD10AA017/018/019/020 in auxiliary level.

7.1.3. With Nexxo auxiliary pump start filling the boiler, the economizer, opening the valvs
LAB11 AA002 / 003, HAG40 AA404, and the dome vents valvs HAD 10 AA501/AA541.

7.1.4 Fill the boiler for 60 minutes (equivalent to about 70 m3 total, then stop pumping. Review
cover seal gasket auxiliary to the Down-Comers. If no leaks continue filling.

7.1.5. In case of leaks, drain pool plant approved and proceed to repair gasket seal.

7.1.6. Continue filling the boiler level control through auxiliary dome to be visible level in the
steam dome.

7.1.7. With the boiler operating at level over internals, confirm that there are no leaks in the
sistem.

7.1.8. Once the boiler with required level, fill the primary superheater in countercurrent with
demineralized water.

7.1.9. Verify that the superheater is filled looking for a rise in the auxiliary level indication
installed in the dome.

7.1.10. Having completed the filling, cut demineralised water (demi water).

7.1.11. Empty the boiler, starting the flushing to Posco pool.


Open valves in HDP drainage line until verify that the water is clear.

7.1.12. Carry on auxiliary boiler to reach state to 6 bar (saturated steam), considering that the
estimated time to provide steam at 6 bar, is about 4 hours.

7.1.13. After the flushing, refill the boiler with the pump system, start filling the boiler, the
economizer.

7.1.14 Fill the boiler controling the level through auxiliary level to be visible level in the steam
dome.

7.1.15. Having completed the filling, cut demineralised water (demi water). Stop pump system.

7.1.16. Nexxo adjust the level of the boiler and to align the auxiliary circuit to flow from Down-
Comers to suction of Nexxo pumps, downloading Nexxo heat exchangers coming to the ECO.
Open vents in the dome.

7.1.18. Having completed the review of the operation of the Chemical Cleaning Circuit, start
circulation and proceed with step heating.

7.1.19. Align circuit for heating step. Check valves to continuous purge line and Nexxo heat
exchangers.

7.1.20. Start heating the auxiliary boiler auxiliary Nexxo line of 4" main valve of the boiler
Nexxo. Slowly open valve preventing water hammer, continually draining the condensate drain
line exchangers Nexxo to effluent drainage pool.

7.1.21. With the hot line to proceed to inject steam into the dome directly and steam heat
exchangers Nexxo.

7.1.22. Check temperature rise, measured with digital thermometer in a dome raiser through
peepholes of burners, auxiliary pumps area and heat exchangers Nexxo, input and output. As
level in the domo increases must be necessary drain water to pool.

7.1.23. Monitor and maintain temperature range from 65 to 70 ° C. Estimated time to heat water
is about 10 hours.

7.1.24. During the circulation and water heating and boiler Posco, prepare Alkaline stage
chemicals in Nexxo tank.

7.1.25. Remove 6000 liters from the boiler and lead to Nexxo tank.

7.1.26. Add chemicals to the Nexxo tank in a controlled manner, to homogenize the solution
properly.
Product to add auxiliary tanks
• Trisodium Phosphate: 1.2% (2400 kg)
• Surfactant: 0.1% (200 lt.)

7.2 ALCALINE STAGE

7.2.1. Maintain circulation, controlling the temperature range of 60 to 70 ° C, only Nexxo heat
exchangers.

7.2.2. Injecting an alkaline solution to the suction Nexxo circulation pumps, vv28, gradually to be
homogenized in the boiler (minimum 15 minutes, maximum 30 minutes of injection), in order to
keep any oils and fat in suspension. Control and maintain temperature range of 60 to 70 ° C.

7.2.3. Fill with water to over internals level into the dome (measured in auxiliary level).

7.2.4. Check that the pH is 12 (measured with paper), in homogeneous form in the boiler. The
measurement points are the online sampler download, return of auxiliary pumps and dome.

7.2.5. The boiler and auxiliary circuits, will be circulated for a minimum of 12 hours. During this time
recirculation aling the circuit valves to allow cleaning solution to circulate through the witness tube.

7.2.6. Every 2 hours move the valvs at the lines fron downcomers. This is changing the suction
from downcomers n1 and n2 to n3 and n4.

7.2.7. During the alkaline stage, preparing the acid solution to neutralize in a Nexxo tank. Take 2
m3 hot water from the boiler, add the chemical in a controlled manner, to homogenize the solution
properly.

• Citric Acid to neutralize: 0.18% (330 kg) Approx.

7.2.8. At the end of the base stage, still circulate, it will gradually injecting neutralizing chemical
(minimum 15 minutes, maximum 30 minutes of injection), up to pH 7 with successive checks on
the return action last approximately one hour.

7.2.9. During the neutralization, prepare acid stage in Nexxo tank. In 9000 liters of water fron the
boiler, add the chemical in a controlled manner, to homogenize the solution properly.

Product to add auxiliary tanks


• Citric Acid Product, 3%: 5640 kg
• Inhibitor Rodine 31 A, 0.2%: 400 liters

Once dissolved, the acid and the inhibitor, the solution to be sampled and will test the effectiveness
of corrosion inhibitor, by the method of the nail (Nail test).

This test is developed through a steel pin again, not oxidized, which is applied an acid solution with
a concentration equivalent to the final result in the boiler, taking a sample of the ponds, which have
been prepared with the inhibitor of corrosion. If this sample at the same concentration and
temperature that will have in the boiler not produce hydrogen generation on the surfaces of the nail,
the solution is properly inhibited. Otherwise you must add as much inhibitor and repeat the test.

7.3 ACID STAGE

7.3.1. After the neutralization and stop the movement, preparing the acid injection.

7.3.2. Inject the acid solution from 20 m3 Nexxo tank to the suction of the circulation pumps, vv
28, in a controlled manner by obtaining values close to 3% of acid in the mixture to be
homogenized into the boiler (minimum 30 minutes, maximum 60 minutes of injection), for the
purpose of removing iron oxide from the boiler tubes. Control and maintain temperature range
of 60 to 70 ° C.

7.3.3. During the injection process will take periodic samples and will be measuring the acidity of
the discharge of circulating pumps, to verify the% of acid from the mixture and adjusting the
mixing ratio.

7.3.4. Perform acidity % and temperature control at this stage.

7.3.5. After the injection of acid, starting to take samples in the discharge of the pumps and the
dome Nexxo every 30 minutes to determine Fe and acidity.

7.3.6. Is estimated to perform the acid stage for a minimum of 12 hours every 2 hours alternating
movement. This is changing the suction from downcomers n1 and n2 to n3 and n4.

7.3.7. The completion of the step of removing inorganic will be verified by analyzing the
following parameters:

7.3.8. Based on the analysis, when the dissolved iron content and available acid remain stable for
two or three consecutive samples, the acid stage will be terminated.
According experience in similar projects is expected that:
 Maximun limits of iron concentration in solución: 0.4 – 0,5 %
 Maximun limits of remaining acidity %: 2.4 – 2,7 %

7.4 NEUTRALIZING AND PASIVATION STAGE

7.4.1 During the acid stage, prepare the chemical for pH adjustment in Nexxo tank, prepare
solution in 6000 liters of water, add the chemical in a controlled manner, to homogenize the
solution properly.

Product to add auxiliary tanks:


Caustic Soda • Product: 1, 2% (2160 kg) Approx.

7.4.2 After the acid stage, still circulate, it will gradually injecting the chemical, up to pH 7 or
nearby. Make checks pH in the return, an action that will last approximately one hour, changing the
lines.

7.4.3 During this pH adjustment, the chemical preparation of Neutralizing stage in Nexxo tanks.
Prepare solution in 2000 liters of water, add the chemical in a controlled manner, to homogenize
the solution properly.

Product to add auxiliary tanks


• Product Alkaline Sodium Carbonate: 0.5% (900 Kg)

7.4.4 Reached pH 7, apply the solution of sodium carbonate to raise the pH to a range close to 10,
adding it slowly, with control in return, changing the lines.

7.4.5 For the stage Passivating the product will be added to the recirculation, keeping 60 to 70 ° C:

• Carbohidrazine 0.2% (400 kg)

7.4.6 The boiler is recirculated, keeping the temperature from 60 to 70 ° C for a minimum of 10
hours.

7.4.7 After the period of recirculation, steam stop close valvs to heat exchangers, Nexxo auxiliary
boiler stop, close suction and discharge valves and stop Nexxo pumps.

7.4.8 Align the circuit to drain the boiler Passivating to the effluent pool, for this opening valves
conecting with drainnage lines and all associated valves from headers. Open boiler vent.

7.4.9 It should open the steam drum at both ends, vent and control up to have an atmosphere
with oxygen greater than 20% for income of persons (Posco - Nexxo) for inspection and
cleaning.

7.4.10 Posco y Nexxo will inspect results of cleaning.

7.4.11 Verify the presence of sludge and solid waste within the dome. Nexxo shall remove loose
debris in steam drum, if necessary, shall be wash with a passivating solution.

7.5 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

7.5.1. The acceptance criteria of the process of Boiler Chemical Cleaning, must meet the following
conditions:

7.5.2. Measuring the control parameters chemical cleaning process is carried out by taking
samples of the circulating solution every half hour.

7.5.3. It will record the parameters measured in the protocols, which should be attached.

7.5.4. Parameters % acidity and % iron must remain stable in a small range, in three consecutive
measurements, to determinate that the acid stage is finished.

7.5.5. The final inspection is done visually within the lines and equipment by inspection staff.
Should not show residues attached inside the equipment and lines.

7.5.6. It is acceptable residual deposits containing not more than 20 g/m2 (magnetite) and a weight
loss less than or equal to 10 g/m2/hr. (Certificate of corrosion)

7.5.7. It will photographic record of the results.

7.5.8. Points to be inspected are:

• Dome
• lower heads of the boiler
• Tube witness

7.6 PRESERVATION

Once the chemical cleaning is finished, boiler will be preserved if it will be some time without to
operate.
This condition means to fill the boiler with demin water and ammonia.
Ammonia is necessary to reach pH between 9 to 10.

7.6.1 For fill the boiler will be use the auxiliary piping with some changes in order to fill by the
bottom headers.

7.6.2 Demin water pump starts with the circuit prepared to inject ammonia.

7.6.3 Chemical injection pump must be connected to ammonia drum. Nexxo circulation pump
starts to fill the boiler.

7.6.4 Permanent drum level will be prepared to control the level when the boiler filling starts.

7.6.5 When starts boiler filling with demin water, al the same time starts ammonia injection.

7.6.6 It`s defined to inject 300 ppm of ammonia to reach pH 9 to 10 for preservation.

7.6.7 Ammonia will be injected gradually until to fill the boiler al operation level.

7.6.7 During the filling it`s necessary to check pH. For this, a sample is taken al the circulation
pump discharge.

7.6.8 The following picture show the relarionship between pH and ammonia residual.

7.6.9 When the level into the drum reah operation level demin water, chemical injetion and
recirculation pump must be sttoped.

7.6.10 Manual valves of bottom headers will be closed.

- Access Restriction: Throughout the admission process will allow the area to authorized
personnel only. You must isolate the sector with security tapes to prevent the entry of
unauthorized personnel.

- Personal protective equipment: All personnel involved in the chemical wash should use
their security features, including eye protection and antacid suit

- Special Prohibition: Smoking not use flame or heat, no welds in the vicinity.

- Contingency Plan: Provide a plan in case of chemical spill accidents including personnel
involved in slaughter or other.

- Access to the domes: Control breathing and acceptable conditions of temperature before
entering the domes.
