Geometry in the Real World

Activities:
Students will complete the following activities during the course of this project:

1. Flipgrid videos of definitions of geometric shapes.

2. Instagram posts of finding geometric shapes in the real world
3. Skype session with an architect to discuss how geometry impacts their job.

Activity #1 - Flipgrid

● Students will use Flipgrid to share definitions of geometric shapes
○ Each student will be assigned a geometric shape from the attached list at
the end of this document.
○ Students will research their assigned shape - the definition, special
characteristics, and where this shape is used or can be found in the real
world.
○ Students will create a 90-second video on Flipgrid teaching what they
learned about their shape.
○ Students will then respond to at least 3 of their classmate's videos.
● The Flipgrid code is h
 bx90o8.

Activity #2 - Instagram
● After students have explored the definitions of geometric shapes, they will
complete a geometry selfie activity using Instagram.
○ Students will be given the complete list of shapes at the end of this
document.
○ Students must pick 5 shapes to find examples of in the real world. They
need to make sure that their examples align with the geometric definitions
as shared in the Flipgrid assignment.
○ Students will take selfies with these shapes as found in the real world and
post to their Instagram account using #ehsgeometryselfie
● The Instagram account @ehsgeometryselifes was created to use as an example
account and this is how the teacher will interact with the students on Instagram.

Activity #3 - Skype
● Students will participate in a Skype session with a professional architect.
○ Prior to the Skype session, students will prepare a list of questions for the
architect in relation to how they use geometry and math in their job.
○ During the Skype session, the professional will start by sharing a little bit
about their job and including how they first became interested in it and
how often they use geometry.
○ Students will then take turns asking their questions of the professional.
● The teacher will need to have or create a Skype account. That account will be
used to contact and Skype with the guest speaker. My personal Skype account is
pictured below.
