London: A British couple booked themselves into a clinic to quit smoking after the vet said it
was the only way to save their beloved sick parrot.
Kevin Barclay and Sharon Wood gave up a 50-cigarette-a-day habit to save their Amazon orange-
winged parrot J.J, said the vet, Glen Cousquer of the South Beech Veterenary Surgery in Essex,
southeastern England.
“One of the key things that we need to get right with parrots generally is air quality, “he told
Reuters. “This particular bird endured very severe respiratory problems. The owners were instructed
to do everything they could to improve the bird’s environment.”
“I think I must have shaken the owners up quite badly, because the next time I saw them they
actually have booked themselves into one of the anti- smoking clinics and were determined to stop.
They’ve gone for five weeks, “he said.
Cousquer said, “J.J is doing really well. It is certainly going to improve his life expectancy. It
may help the owners too.”

Two new species of dinosaurs, one a quick- moving meat-eater and the other a giant- plant –
eater, have been discovered in Antarctica. The 70 million year old fossil of the carnivore would have
rested for millenniums at the bottom of the Antarctic Sea, while the remains of the 30 meter long
plant- eater were found on the top of a mountain. The little carnivore about 1.8 meters tall was found
on James Ross Island, off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Not yet named, the animal probably
floated out of the sea after it died and settled to the bottom of what was then shallow area of the
Weddell Sea. Its bones and teeth suggest it may represent a population of two- legged carnivores
that survived in the Antarctic long after other predators took over elsewhere on the globe. “For
whatever reason, they were still hanging out on the Antarctic continent, “Case said in a statement.
A second team led by William Hammer of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois found
the 200 million year old plant eater’s fossils on a mountaintop 13, 000 feet high near the Beardmore
Glacier. Not known as Mt. Kirk Patrick, the area was once a soft river bed.

In recent years, the Detroit area has experienced important changes in its industry mix. Not
by chance but by design. The Detroit Regional Chamber, local governments and the Michigan
Economic Development Corporation have been successful in attracting new businesses to the area.
The region is attractive to many companies because of the kinds of firms and potential customers
who are already doing business here. A significant change has been a shift from manufacturing
employment to service sector employment including business services, health care and engineering
establishments. The service sector now makes up 33% of the area’s employment. In 2001,
manufacturing companies employed 20% of the area’s workers compared with 27% just 15 years
ago.
Business services are the region’s largest employer and one of the fast growing. Companies
for computer and data processing services, engineering and architectural services, tourism and
entertainment businesses, and training and education organizations are also expanding. Health
services are the third largest sector and employ about 181, 000 people. Individual doctor’s office and
clinics, hospitals, and personal care facilities are numerous and ready to provide top notch care.

was searching for bits of second-hand furniture and kept seeing ‘beautiful old sewing machines that
were next to nothing to buy’. He couldn’t resist them. Then, a friend had a machine that wouldn’t
work, so she asked Barton to look at it for her. At that stage he was not an authority on the subject,
but he worked on it for three days and eventually got it going.
Later he opened up a small stand in London market. “Most people seemed uninterested.
Then a dealer came and bought everything I’d taken along. I thought, “Great! This is my future life.”
But after that I never sold another one there and ended up with a stall in another market which was
only moderately successful.’
Nowadays, he concentrates on domestic machines in their original box containers with their

Lungs: Facts, Function and Diseases
By Alina Bradford, Live Science Contributor | February 1, 2018 08:20pm ET
The right lung is shorter than the left lung to make room for the liver. The left lung is narrower than
the right to make room for the heart.
Lungs are sacks of tissue located just below the rib cage and above the diaphragm. They are an
important part of the respiratory system and waste management for the body.
Text 8
A person's lungs are not the same size. The right lung is a little wider than the left lung, but it is also
shorter. According to York University, the right lung is shorter because it has to make room for the
liver, which is right beneath it. The left lung is narrower because it must make room for the heart.
Typically, a man's lungs can hold more air than a woman's. At rest, a man's lungs can hold around
750 cubic centimeters (about 1.5 pints) of air, while a woman's can hold around 285 to 393 cc (0.6 to
0.8 pints) of air, according to York University. "The lungs are over-engineered to accomplish the job
that we ask them to do," said Dr. Jonathan P. Parsons, a professor of internal medicine, associate
director of Clinical Services, and director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and
Sleep Medicine at the OSU Asthma Center at The Ohio State University. "In healthy people without
chronic lung disease, even at maximum exercise intensity, we only use 70 percent of the possible
lung capacity."
22. If shorter is to longer; ________ is to narrower?
A. bigger
B. higher
C. taller
D. smarter
E. wider
23. The left lung is narrower because it must make room for the heart. The underlined Word is an
example of subordinating conjunctions. Which of the following is a correlative conjunction?
A. And D. since
B. Both E. while
C. however
According to the American Lung Association, adults typically take 15 to 20 breaths a minute,
which comes to around 20,000 breaths a day. Babies tend to breath faster than adults. For example, a
newborn's normal breathing rate is about 40 times each minute while the average resting respiratory
rate for adults is 12 to 16 breaths per minute.
Though breathing seems simple, it is a very complex process.
24. What do you mean by the underlined word?
A. complicated
B. extraordinary
6|Latihan US English-XII
C. plain
D. simple
E. worst
The right lung is divided into three different sections, called lobes. The left lung has just two
lobes. The lobes are made of sponge-like tissue that is surrounded by a membrane called pleura,
which separates the lungs from the chest wall. Each lung half has its own pleura sack. This is why,
when one lung is punctured, the other can go on working.
25. lung : respiratory system ; ________ : digestive system
A. heart
B. muscle
C. skin
D. stomach
E. veins
The lungs are like bellows. When they expand, they pull air into the body. When they compress,
they expel carbon dioxide, a waste gas that bodies produce. Lungs do not have muscles to pump air
in and out, though. The diaphragm and rib cage essentially pump the lungs.
26. What is the opposite of the underlined word?
A. bellows
B. compress
C. expel
D. produce
E. pump
As a person breathes, air travels down the throat and into the trachea, also known as the
windpipe. The trachea divides into smaller passages called the bronchial tubes. The bronchial tubes
go into each lung. The bronchial tubes branch out into smaller subdivisions throughout each side of
the lung. The smallest branches are called bronchioles and each bronchiole has an air sac, also called
alveoli. There are around 480 million alveoli in the human lungs, according to the Department of
Anatomy of the University of Göttingen.
27. According to the passage, what is the other name for trachea?
A. alveoli D. bronchioles
B. air sac E. windpipe
C. bronchial tubes
Text 9
The alveoli have many capillary veins in their walls. Oxygen passes through the alveoli, into
the capillaries and into the blood. It is carried to the heart and then pumped throughout the body to
the tissues and organs.
As oxygen is going into the bloodstream, carbon dioxide passes from the blood into the
alveoli and then makes its journey out of the body. This process is called gas exchange. When a
person breathes shallowly, carbon dioxide accumulates inside the body. This accumulation causes
yawning, according to York University.
7|Latihan US English-XII
28. The underlined word accumulates mean_______________.
A. collect
B. disperse
C. lessen
D. scatters
E. spread
The lungs have a special way to protect themselves. Cilia, which look like a coating of very
small hairs, line the bronchial tubes. The cilia wave back and forth spreading mucus into the throat
so that it can be dispelled by the body. Mucus cleans out the lungs and rids them of dust, germs and
any other unwanted items that may end up in the lungs.
29. gathered: collected; ________dispelled
A. accepted
B. allowed
C. eliminated
D. garnered
E. recalled
The lungs can have a wide range of problems that can stem from genetics, bad habits, an
unhealthy diet and viruses. "The most common lung related conditions I see are reactive airways or
asthma, as well as smoking-related emphysema, in my general practice," Dr. Jack Jacoub, a medical
oncologist and director of thoracic oncology at Memorial Care Cancer Institute at Orange Coast
Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, told Live Science.
30. What is the main idea of the paragraph?
A. Bad Habits
B. Common Disease
C. Lung Problems
D. Oncologist
E. Science Facts
Text 10
Asthma, also called reactive airway disease before a diagnosis of asthma, is a lung disease
where the air passageways in the lungs become inflamed and narrowed, making it hard to breath. In
the United States, more than 25 million people, including 7 million children, have asthma, according
to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Lung cancer is cancer that originates in the lungs. It is the No. 1 cause of deaths from
cancer in the United States for both men and women, according to the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms of
cancer include coughing up blood, a cough that doesn't go away, shortness of breath, wheezing,
chest pain, headaches, hoarseness, weight loss and bone pain.

Text 11
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is long-term lung disease that prevents a
person from breathing properly due to excess mucus or the degeneration of the lungs. Chronic
bronchitis and emphysema are considered COPD diseases. About 11.4 million people in the United
States suffer from COPD, with about 80 to 90 percent of COPD deaths attributed to smoking,
according to the American Cancer Society.
Sometimes, those with COPD get lung transplants, replacement lungs garnered from organ
donors, to save their lives. Research is also being done on growing new lungs from stem cells.
Currently, stem cells extracted from the patient's blood or bone marrow is being used as a treatment
to heal damaged lung tissue.
A. instant
B. long term
C. malignant
D. serious
E. tough
Text 12
Lung infections, such as bronchitis or pneumonia, are usually caused by viruses, but can
also be caused by fungal organisms or bacteria, according to Ohio State University. Some severe or
chronic lung infections can cause fluid in the lungs and other symptoms such as swollen lymph
nodes, coughing up blood and a persistent fever.
Being overweight can also affect the lungs. "Yes, being overweight does adversely affect the
lungs because it increases the work and energy expenditure to breath," said Jacoub. "In the most
extreme form, it acts like a constricting process or vest around the chest such as that seen in the
'Pickwickian syndrome.'"

35. In this text, why should people avoid being overweight?
A. it can affect the lungs
B. it can cause boredom
C. it can be hard to move
D. it can cause fungal organisms
E. it can increase energy
Text 13
One of the best ways to promote good lung health is to avoid cigarette smoke because at least
70 out of the 7,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke damages the cells within the lungs. According to
the Mayo Clinic, people who smoke have the greatest risk of lung cancer. The more a person
smokes, the greater the risk. Those who smoke are 15 to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer
according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. American Lung Association and a
specialist in pulmonary medicine.
The Rush University Medical Center also suggests practicing deep breathing exercises, staying
hydrated and regular exercise to keep the lungs healthy. Parsons also recommends having homes
tested for radon. "Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the breakdown of
uranium in the ground. It typically leaks into a house through cracks in the foundation and walls.
Radon is the main cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, and the second-leading cause of the disease
after smoking," said Parsons.

There are two poles in our earth, in the south is Antarctic and in the north is Arctic. Those
two places are the coldest place on earth. The sun never rises for 6 months and another 6 months it
never sets. But even though the sun rises, the light is not bright at all, that makes this place cold all
the time.
Antarctic ( South Pole) is about 13 000 000 km2 and has 2,000 meters thick ice layer. It is
surrounded by a frozen ocean and which always will be whether in winter or summer. The rain
almost never falls in this place, even the thickness of the ice layer increases for about 10-15 cm each
year.
Antarctic was seen first on 1820 and in 1821 an American arrived in this pole. In 1911, five
expedition teams competed to reach this place and the winner was the Norwegian team, led by
Ronald Amundsen. In 1912, a wooden ship, Discovery sailed to Antarctic and brought an expedition
team from England led by Captain Robert Scott. Discovery had reached the South Pole for about
1,450 km far, but on their journey back the team unsuccessfully reached England.
There are only little pieces of plants and animals living in Antarctic. The animals exist in
Antarctic are penguins, seals, and albatrosses. The plants are only algae. There are some valuable
minerals below the Antarctic’s ice layer, like gold, brass and uranium. According to International
agreement, it is forbidden to mine those minerals because it will disturb the pole’s ecology.
