Lesson Objectives
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
 Students will be able to identify the letters (U) as well as specific word formations that are associated with the
letter.
 Students will be able to identify, say and count to the Number 15.

8:30am Motivation and Lesson Introduction:
1. The students enter the classroom and place their library books in the
basket located at the front of the classroom.

2. The students are then required to locate their name set up on the
three desks. Bells
The students are to place the letters of their name in order, trace the
pre-written name provided and then write their name by themselves Name Sheets
on the line provided at the bottom of the laminated sheet.
Once the students have completed this, they are able to free play in Permanent Markers
the available play centres around the classroom until the day begins.

During the above activities, the educator must walk around and praise the
students to increase their self confidence levels as well as providing support Number of the Week

5. After the timetable has been read and explained with the students,
the number of the week (15 – fifteen) will be introduced to the Demonstration
students.
o Does anyone know what this number is?
o Let’s all count to 15 together. The educator may wish to
extend the students thinking by prompting “oh no we have run
out of fingers, what can we do?”
o What two numbers together make 15?

6. Once the number of the week has been introduced, the letter of the
week (U) is introduced to the students. The students with the
educators assistance will make the sound and work through some
examples on a word card.

7. After the above steps are complete, the educator will instruct the
students to point their knees towards the board in preparation for the
“Aliens Love Underpants” by Claire Freedman book.

8. After the book has been finished, the educator will then explain each
table top activity to the students.
“But first before you go and play I just want to show you something”

9. Using the interactive whiteboard and the “design your own

underpants” template, a demonstration will be shown to the students
on how to decorate and make it as colourful as possible.

10. The students will then be distributed among the various learning
areas based upon their interest.

During the mat session, if the students become off topic or distracted, the
educator is to implement the behaviour management strategy of “are your
eyes watching (pointing to eyes), are your ears listening (pointing to ears), are
you voices quiet and are your bodies still.

Lesson Development:
9:20am
The table top activity is set up with the appropriate writing and drawing
materials before instructing students to come to the table to complete their
activity.

1. The students are given a template sheet as well as a lead pencil to

write their name on the back. Number 15 Underpants

2. As the students complete this, the students will be required to put 15
dots using the dot markers on their underpants. Lead Pencil for Name
The educator should use the prompt of “what is our number of the Writing
week?”

The educator must not restrict the students to one colour, they may

3. Using the dot markers placed in front of the students as well as the Portfolios
demonstration work sample made by the educator previously, the
students are free to place only 15 dots on their underpants. Take Home Boxes
o The educator should strive to use the prompts of:
“What two numbers make 15?” Questioning
“Remember on my demonstration…why don’t you try this?”
“Why don’t you use your favourite colour and your second
favourite colour if you want to make it colourful?”

4. Some educator assistance may be required to focus the students’

attention towards counting aloud to 15 whilst putting the dots on their
page.

5. After the students have placed their 15 dots on the page, they will
then be required to use the textas and trace the the two number 15s
located down the bottom of the underpants.

6. Once this is complete the students’ artwork will then be placed in their
take home box, portfolios or displayed around the classroom.

As recess takes place at 10:30am if some students have not completed the
activity they will do so after recess or in the next session on another day.

10:30am Lesson Closure:

At the closure of the table top craft activity, invite the students to share their Discussions
craft by scaffolding discussion.
What is our number of the week? Can you count your dots on your page? Do Questioning
we have 15?
The closure of the lesson is completed when the students have completed
their craft activity as the classroom is very play based.

Assessment: Work Samples

The students are observed by the educator during their play activity and
assessment will be taken in terms of the students’ artwork samples in Anecdotal Notes
conjunction with anecdotal notes.
