SURVEY ON THE FACTORS AND PERCEPTION ENCOUNTERED BY

DROPOUT STUDENT AS A BASIS FOR CAMPAIGN SPEECH

TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT DROPOUT
The word dropout could be in every aspects of a student’s life. For
some reason, the very definition of the term dropout is controversial.
According to Kara Bonneau (2014), what makes a student a dropout and
how to know their personal views requires a wide array of thinking. Base
on previous research, dropout means leaving the school and studies for
some practical reasons. But somehow, student does it unnecessarily due
to recklessness and lack of parental guidance.
Talking about the term “out-of-school youth” is critical, and
discussing about its cause and effect is also a different job. Its negative
effect that holds the students’ future has been in a severe matter for
years. Students who dropped out of school can be a tremendous
problem for the Education Sectors, not only in the Philippines but also on
many countries around the world. The problem itself is getting bigger
each year that could be alarming for so many reasons.
Those students who are now out-of-school youth may not have the
opportunity to have a decent job that requires at least a college degree.
This could lead to future unemployment, violent crimes and under
developing society that could give hindrance on the country’s economy
and growth. These negative effects and outcomes aforementioned above
entailed us to do this kind of research. This research, visions to lessen
the upsurge of dropout rate to help improve the condition of the youth on
this present society.
Though there’s a lot of study about this topic, this research will
furthermore investigate and identify the factors and the negative effects
of being a dropout. This will give a deeper understanding and knowledge
on why dropping out have been a relevant issue on high school students
in Mauban, Quezon. This research is sought to know, inspect, inform,
and give a clear point of view about a dropout. This will understand their
factors that led them to pursue an awful life, without education.
The primary purpose of this study is to identify the factors and
perceptions encountered by dropouts. Specifically, it ought to answer the
following questions:
1. What is the respondents demographic profile in terms of:

1.1 Age
1.2 Sex
1.3 Civil Status
1.4 Location
1.5 Educational Attainment
2. What are the factors that affect a student to dropout?

2.1 personal factors;

2.2 family factors;
2.3 environment/peer factors; and
2.4 school factors
2.5 others
3. What are the respondent’s perceptions and realization after they
commit dropout?
4. What are the problems encountered by a drop-out:

4.1 unemployment;
4.2 lower income;
4.3 incarceration; or
4.4 missed opportunities?
Ho: There is a significant relationship between the students and the
different factors of a dropout.
This study was conducted to determine the Factors and Perception
of a Dropout Student, with the study’s rightfulness and validity, the
researchers believed that this study will significantly benefit the following:

Respondents, this will help them find ways on possibly continuing

their study and develop a positive perspective and interpersonal
relationship.
Parents, for this will help them encourage their sons and
daughters to pursue their studies and to be more supportive to their
children’s education.

Schools, for this will help them make an intervention program to

strengthen the campaign on preventing the increase of dropout rate. This
will also add up information for the school registrar’s office as a basis for
documentation.
Government, particularly the Department of Education, for this
will help them to have a substantial solution or cure to lessen the
massively growing dropout rate that causes economic problem such as,
unemployment, crime, etc. that hinder the country’s growth.

Future Researchers, for the finding of the study will serve as a

reference material and a guide for future researchers who wish to
conduct the same investigation and the likes.
The study focuses on determining the factors and perception of a
dropout student from the selected barangay of Mauban, Quezon. These
respondents are student dropouts who have their personal reasons and
realizations as a dropout student. This research will cover up a number
of respondents who are chosen from a judgmental sampling. Only the
dropouts from the range of 15-25 years old were chosen to have a much
better accuracy of the study. The said respondents will help the research
provide data as the variable of the study.
Students need to relate schoolwork to their own lives and future
goals if they are to given serious attention to their classroom learning
activities. But schoolwork makes little sense to many poor or minority
students, because their classroom tasks seem boring and meaningless,
with little connection to their own experiences and expectations for later
life.
A theory by McPartland, James M. said that students who see little
relevance of school to their own experiences and futures are deprived of
the intrinsic motivation that comes from interesting activities and of the
instrumental motivation that comes from activities that have a strong
payoff potential. The theory also cited that poor minority students face
particularly strong barriers to motivation from the lack of relevance of
their school experiences to current interest or future goals.
Moreover, what students learn in many courses or how well they do in
classwork is seldom inked to their instrumental motivation of getting a
good job or entering a favored career.
Academic mediation theory said that, the poor academic
achievement is one of the strongest predictors of high school dropout.
This theory examines the mediation effect of poor academic
achievement on other factors, such as deviant affiliation, personal
deviance, family socialization and structural strains, associated with
school dropout. Essentially, it looks at how poor academic achievement
interacts with and affects the relationship between high school dropout
and other factors.
Meanwhile, Structural strains theory focuses on the relationship
between demographic factors, such as socioeconomic status, gender
and ethnicity, and dropout. Boys are much more likely to drop out than
girls and dropouts are most likely from a family with a low socioeconomic
status. There has been contention over the influence of ethnicity on
dropout rates. However, it is clear that it does have some influence. Low
socioeconomic status is a significant predictor of dropout beyond poor
academic achievement. Ethnicity and gender had no significance beyond
their influence on academic achievement.

This chapter presents the Locale of the Study, Research Design,
Population and Sampling, Research Instrumentation, Validation of
Instrument and Data Gathering Procedure to list down all the methods
and ways in conducting this research. Statistical Treatment is also found
in this chapter.
The researchers will conduct the study in the Selected Barangay of
Mauban, Quezon. Proven that Mauban, Quezon is one of the
municipalities that have issues in terms of dropouts which is a factor of
the growing unemployment in the town’s jurisdiction. The respondents
can be a dropout from different schools. As of August 2008,
the Department of Education lists 35 public schools in Mauban; 29 are
Elementary schools, while the remaining 6 are High Schools who
experience numbers of dropout.
The researchers will select a Barangay as the main location to conduct
this research since the researchers can’t cater the entire dropout
students of Mauban. The gathering of the dropouts in the said selected
barangay of Mauban, Quezon will be the respondents in this study.
In this study, the researchers used the descriptive design
employed to identify the role and significance of the problems
encountered by the dropouts. The aim of descriptive research is to verify
the formulated hypotheses that refer to the present condition in order to
clarify it.
The descriptive approach is quick and more practical in terms of
financial aspect. The researchers used this research design because
they believed that it is the most appropriate method that will provide the
information and will examine the relationship among variables throughout
the validity of the study.
To determine the factors and perceptions of a dropout student, the
Judgmental sampling is done to choose who will be the respondents on
conducting this research. Only the dropout students from the selected
Barangay on Mauban, Quezon with the range of 15-25 years old were
chosen to have a much better accuracy and reliability base on the
relevance of the problem.

Furthermore, Judgmental Sampling is the most appropriate

sampling to be done when it comes of the availability of the respondents.
The researchers will use self-made questionnaires that will function
as a data gathering tool on the dropout students of Mauban, Quezon.
The researchers will need the use of consent form to permit the
distribution of the questionnaire to the selected respondents, signed by
the research adviser and approved by the Principal of Dr. Maria D.
Pastrana National High School.
The self-made questionnaires that will be used in the study will be
validated by the teacher chosen by the researchers. Also, some of the
terms were checked and corrected for some ethical considerations.

Furthermore, to test the validity of the self-made questionnaires

that will be used on the study, the researchers will test it out with 20
randomly selected dropouts. These randomly selected dropouts and their
answers were not a part of the actual study process and were only used
for testing purposes.
After the questionnaires were answered, the researchers will ask
the respondents for any suggestions to ensure further improvement and
validity of the instrument.
The researchers will seek for the approval of the Adviser, School
Principal and the Respondents. As the researchers are permitted and the
study is approved, the self-made questionnaires will be distributed on the
selected respondents as a data gathering tool. After collecting all the
data, the researchers will tally, tabulate, compute, analyze and interpret
the data statistically.
In order to compute and interpret the data that are gathered from
the collection of questionnaires answered by the respondents, the data
were tallied, analyzed and statistical treated to determine the Factors
and Perception of a Dropout Student from the Selected Barangay of
Mauban, Quezon. The weighed mean was used as the statistical
treatment applied in the study.
Formula:
WM – 5f+4f+3f+2f+1f
N

Where:
WM - weighed mean
∑f - Frequency
N - number of respondents
