qu'il avait conçu l'idea comme étant originellement l'idea ex-
tensions, il aurait été un idéaliste absolu - Jacobi dit : un idéaliste
transcendantal. Reinhold a partagé cette conception erronée de Jacobi
et, dans sa recension11 du System der transzendentalen Idealismus 12 de
Schelling parue dans Y Allgemeine Literaturzeitung en août 1800, il
avait esquissé à l'avance, pour Schelling, le système de l'identité
auquel ce dernier devait arriver après avoir supprimé l'unilatéralité de
Fichte. Reinhold écrit aussi en 1803 à Jacobi : « Tu as déjà vu alors,
par un regard plus pénétrant que celui de Fichte , même dans le
champ du savoir spéculatif, ce que Schelling n'a vu qu'après toi c'est-
à-dire que l'identité du fini et de l'infini... doit valoir non pas seulement
subjectivement mais aussi objectivement ou plutôt non pas pour l'un ni
pour l'autre comme tel mais absolument pour l'absolu... Tu savais
retenir cette célèbre intuition intellectuelle de l'identité... qui conduisait
instinctivement Spinoza... bien avant Schelling et Hegel qui l'a apprise
de Schelling»13. Fichte lui aussi a affirmé ce primat de Jacobi14.
La porte par laquelle on entre dans ce système de l'identité c'est
l'élargissement de l'intuition intellectuelle à l'objectif. Bien des années
plus tard Schelling a reconnu, dans ses Münchner Vorlesungen zur
Geschichte der neueren Philosophie comment il en est arrivé à
admettre une intuition intellectuelle objective : « Fichte exigeait au
début quelque chose d'immédiatement certain. Pour lui c'était le Moi
dont il tâchait de s'assurer, comme de quelque chose d'immédiat,
par l'intuition intellectuelle. Cet acte était appelé intuition intellec-
tuelle, car ici sujet et objet sont une seule chose et non pas une autre
