HAZARD
: a game of chance like craps played with two dice
: a source of danger
 hazards on the roadway
3a : the effect of unpredictable and unanalyzable forces in
determining events : CHANCE , RISK
 the hazards involved in owning your own business

MALFUNCTION
malfunctioned; malfunctioning; malfunctions

: to function imperfectly or badly : fail to operate normally

ACCIDENTAL
: occurring unexpectedly or by chance
 an accidental discovery

 Their meeting was purely accidental.

b : happening without intent or through carelessness and often with unfortunate results
 The death was ruled accidental.

ALTERNATING CURRENT

: an electric current that reverses its direction at regularly recurring

intervals —abbreviation AC

ANODE
: the electrode of an electrochemical cell at which oxidation occurs:
such as

a : the positive terminal of an electrolytic cell

b : the negative terminal of a galvanic cell

CAPACITANCE
a : the property of an electric nonconductor that permits the storage
of energy as a result of the separation of charge that occurs when
opposite surfaces of the nonconductor are maintained at a difference
of potential

b : the measure of this property that is equal to the ratio of the

charge on either surface to the potential difference between the
surfaces

CAPACITOR
: a device that is used to store electrical energy

CIRCUIT
a : a usually circular line encompassing an area
 a swamp about 10 miles in circuit
b : the space enclosed within such a line
 the circuit of the duke's land

CURRENT
a archaic : RUNNING , FLOWING
b (1) : presently elapsing
 the current year
(2) : occurring in or existing at the present time
 the current crisis
 current supplies
 current needs

Desoldering tools

 Solder wick
 Heat guns, also called hot air guns
 Desoldering pump
 Removal alloys
 Removal fluxes
 Heated soldering tweezers
 Various picks and tweezers for tasks such as pulling at, holding, removing, and scraping
components.
 Vacuum and pressure pumps with specialized heater tips and nozzles
 Rework stations, used to repair printed circuit board assemblies that fail factory test

Dielectric (or dielectric material) is an electrical insulator that can be polarized by an

applied electric field. When a dielectric is placed in an electric field, electric charges do not flow
through the material as they do in an electrical conductor but only slightly shift from their average
equilibrium positions causing dielectric polarization.

DIRECT CURRENT
: an electric current flowing in one direction only and substantially
constant in value —abbreviation DC

Discrete Components

1. (electronics) a component with just one circuit element, either passive (resistor,
capacitor, inductor) or active (transistor or vacuum tube).
ELECTRONIC
: of or relating to electrons
a : of, relating to, or utilizing devices constructed or working by the
methods or principles of electronics
 electronic fuel injection
b : implemented on or by means of a computer : involving a
computer
 electronic banking

FLAMMABLE
: capable of being easily ignited and of burning quickly
OHMMETER
: an instrument for indicating resistance in ohms directly

RESISTOR
: a device that has electrical resistance and that is used in an electric
circuit for protection, operation, or current control
Soldering

1. A method of joining two metallic surfaces by melting an alloy between them.

2. An instance of soldering
3. A soldered joint.

Soldering Technique
is a process in which two or more items (usually metal) are joined together by melting and putting
a filler metal (solder) into the joint, the filler metal having a lower melting point than the adjoining
metal. Soldering differs from welding in that soldering does not involve melting the work pieces.

Splicing

a : to unite (two ropes or two parts of a rope) by interweaving the

strands
b : to unite (two lengths of magnetic tape, photographic film, etc.) by
overlapping and securing together two ends

TECHNICIAN
: a specialist in the technical details of a subject or occupation
 a computer technician

TROUBLE
: the quality or state of being troubled especially mentally
: public unrest or disturbance
 there's trouble brewing downtown

VOLTAGE
: electric potential or potential difference expressed in volts

VOLTAMETER
: an apparatus for measuring the quantity of electricity passed
through a conductor by the amount of electrolysis produced (as by
measuring the gases generated from acidulated water or by weighing
the silver deposited from a solution of silver nitrate)
