Scenario: You have been hired as a PRODUCT DEVELOPER by a company that is trying to create a means of
cheaply and efficiently filtering fine air particles. Your company is in Chiang Mai so you will work using local
materials.

Understanding how systems interact can inspire the creation of solutions to the consequences of local and global environmental issues.

Task Description
GOAL To create an air filtration device which is suited to the needs of your intended clients.

ROLE You will be the product researcher, designer, builder, and tester. You will also be the expert on human physiology and the
principles of physics inherent to air filtration.

AUDIENCE Your clients are members of the APIS community.

SITUATION You are in the first few weeks of a new job as a PRODUCT DEVELOPER.

PRODUCT 1. A completed and functional Air Filtration Device

2. An assessment of your Scientific Knowledge
3. Your Product Development Journal
1. A pitch/poster to the APIS community promoting your product

STANDARDS You will be assessed against MYP Design Criteria A - D, MYP Science Criteria A + D, and MYP IDU Criteria A - D.

What safety requirement do you have for us to create the air filter?
(How many accidents should be caused by this machine?)
Client Answer: 0 accidents, no chance for the air filter hurting anyone by any accidents.
● result
How much air can be filtered in a minute?
Client Answer: The AQI number should be between 0-75 PTM.
How often do you think will have to clean the filter?
Client Answer: Once a month.
● Looks
What materials should we use that fits the class?
Client Answer: Materials that is save.
What are the expectations of how professional the product should be?
The product should look professional and it should not be a distraction to the class.
● Size
What size should the product be?
Client Answer: Size of a circular fan.
● Function
what is your expectations for how much the filter will change the air quality in your classroom?
Client Answer: Around 70% or more air will be filtered by the air filter.

DESIGN IDEA 1
Features:
● Simple to make, it saves a lot of hard working in term of making
It.
● Expect the filter paper, design idea also has another two layers
of filtering screen which function to help the main filter paper to
filter the big particles out. So the main filter paper will do less
work.

Materials:
● Friter paper

● Screen
● Fan

DESIGN IDEA 2
Features:
● This product is save. Firstly the design of the product is very
simple and easy to use which reduce the possibility people get
injured when they are using this air filter. Second, The materials
will not cause any safety problem. Even you deliberately touch
the product.

● This product works well because it used 3 different kind of filter

paper, which can possibly filters out most of the particles in the
air.

Materials:
● Plastic frame
● Screen
● Wood box
● Fan
● Filter paper

class.

Noise concerns - The design should get a 3 on the criteria of noise concerns because the volume of the product is about 60 dB.
Safety - We give this design a 4 on the criteria of safety because we are sure that our design won’t have any chance in terms of hurting anyone by
any kind of accidents.
Results - After using the air filter, the AQI number of the room is around 75 PTM. We gave this a 3 because we are sure the AQI in the room should
be around 75 PTM
Looks - The appearance of design look good but still can be better. We gave this one a 3 because we can’t predict weather how it will look when it
is finish so we think there would be room for improvement.
Space - Base on design specification 5, we will gave the design a 4 because we will make sure that the size of the air filter is the size of the
circular fan. Which is about 52 cm (diameter)

Function - The air filtration is able to work and filter 30-50% of the air in the class. We gave this a 2 because we can’t predict weather the product
can filter how many % of the class.

CLIENT INTERVIEW #2

● Are you ok with the design?

Client answer
Yes, the design looks great and I am very exciting to see the final product.
● Any suggestion about the design?
Client answer
No, looks like you all do a good job on planning the design.

● What colour would you want it to be?

Client answer
The product can be any colour you want, but it have to be artistic.
