Problem Statement 1

Design a scrubber column for making 20 % Ammonia solution from ammonium chloride solution.
Feed specifications : Ammonium chloride solution wt 27 %

Problem Statement 2
Design a scrubber system for mix gas containing SO2 & HCl , to produce 30 % HCl & 28 % Na2SO3 solution ,
without contamination.
Feed specification : Feed is a gas stream containing 64 % SO2 & 36 % HCl

Problem Statements 3
Feed specification : 12 kg saturated steam boiler outlet.
4 distillation columns require heating.
The reboiler temperature for each distillation column is as follows:
1st distillation column temperature=190°C
2nd distillation column temperature=140°C
3rd distillation column temperature=160°C
4th distillation column temperature=175°C
1st distillation column vapour temperature is 140°C which condenses and cools to 120°C
2nd distillation column vapour temperature is 80°C which condenses and cools to 60°C
3rd distillation column temperature is 100°C which condenses and cools to 70°C
4th distillation column temperature is 110°C which condenses and cools to 75°C

Q1. It is taking some energy to make 12 kg steam using coals. How to utilize this energy completely without
having to send the 12 kg steam to all columns?
Mass flow rate of steam = 100 kg/hr (This much energy to make this has to be used)
All columns require 100 kg/hr of steam.

Q2. How could the condensers utilise the hot water?

Problem Statement 6
The process for manufacture of Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) involves two distinct steps. In the first stage
Potassium Manganate (K2MnO4) is prepared by a three phase chemical reaction. Potassium Manganate is then
converted to Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) by electrolysis. The current problem involves design of a
chemical reactor for the first step of the process. The chemical reaction is given by the equation: 2KOH + MnO2
+ O2 → K2MnO4 + H2O. Please check whether the equation is balanced or not. If not, rewrite the corrected
equation. Based on the balanced equation, calculate the heat of reaction at NTP, at STP and specify whether the
reaction is exothermic and endothermic. Calculate the heat of reaction between 200 – 240 deg.C for intervals of
10 deg. each.
Manganese dioxide used for the reaction is obtained from pyrolusite ore, which contains about 72% manganese
dioxide. The rest oxides of silica, iron and aluminium. A large excess of KOH is generally required to ensure
that conversion of manganese dioxide is complete as well as ensure that the reactor mass remains fluid at all
times. Prepare a model to calculate the heat load of the reactor operating at 240 deg. C with an excess of caustic
potash (8-10 of theoretical requirement). What effect will the water being generated in the reaction have on the
heat load of the reactor? Provide appropriate values of reactor heat load. If instead of oxygen, atmospheric air
is sparged into the reactor, qty what will be the effect on reactor heat load. By how much will the heat load
increase or decrease? Assume that 5 times excess air is sparged in the reactor. Other appropriate assumptions
may be made and mentioned clearly.
