Dispatch Information

Incident Type: Cup 1

Location: Mahidol University International Demonstration School (MUIDS), 999 Phuttamonthon Sai
4 Road, Salaya, Phutthamonthon District, Nakhon Pathom 73170.
Time: 11.00 am

Additional Details:

Event Synopsis

Scene Description:
The victim fell from the chair wearing a P.E. uniform with bare feet. In addition, he did not wear
any personal protective equipment in the lab. The scalpel stabbed on his neck around right clavicle.
There was blood on his forehead, table, and the floor - the blood gathers together. On the table, there
was a blade, journal, Percocet, a coffee cup, 2 pairs of medical scissors, and a piler. However,
everything was placed neatly and the blade was unopened. The cup was empty. The journal was
closed and a pen was placed at the top of the journal nicely. The last sentence in the journal was
incomplete as someone probably interrupted while the victim was writing it, nevertheless, it was very
clean and had no disturbance in writing.
Interviews Conducted:
Name: Mr. Filip
Information:
+ 11 o’clock in the morning (21/ 09/ 2018)
+ Heard a bang sound, like a sound of something falling
+ No one else around, did not see anyone
+ Door is open
+ Bill is dead on the floor
+ Bill is a scientist

Evidence Collected:

Item Description: DNA extraction (1)

Log Number: 21091
Details: In the crime scene, our group collected the blood sample which located on the table by using
the cotton stick and then put in it the plastic pack and also label it.

Item Description: DNA extraction (2)

Log Number: 21092
Details: In the crime scene, our group collected the blood sample which located on the floor by using
the cotton stick and then put in it the plastic pack and also label it.

Item Description: Fingerprint collection

Log Number: 2809
Details: we have to collect and preserve fingerprint evidence by using Uv light to locate fingerprint in
the crime scene then rub the brush gently in the dusting powder (Charcoal) using a circular motion
and put the clear tape over the fingerprint and slightly remove to capture the print. Next, attach the
print tape to a paper with both victim on the scene and comparison then label where and when the
fingerprint was found.

Item Description: Gel Electrophoresis

Log Number: 1010
Details: First we have to take all the blood samples from the dead body (victim), blood on the table
and even on the floor. We pour the liquid gel into the mole which it has a comb in the middle to
separate DNA then waiting for it to dry. Now using the blood samples from the blood collection tube
using a pipette to transfer the blood to DNA. Through the process of electrophoresis, we still have an
unclear result so then we have to clean it by using stain for three times ten minute each. Finally, the
sample came out as a result of DNA.

Item Description: Drug (Percocet) testing

Log Number: 1510
Details: We had to mash the drug which is Percocet(Positive group) into smaller pieces almost the
powder. Put the powder into the test tube and fill the FeCl3 and mixed them with each other. Wait for
a while and then measure the pH. Next, we took some sample of the starch(Negative group) into the
test tube and also fill it with FeCl3. We then gently shake it for them to mix and measure the pH.
Found the pH of an unknown (from victim) by did the same step of both samples. Bring all the pH
result to compare with the pH indicator chart to know the exact level of pH.

Item Description: Body temperature

Log Number: 1810
Details: We use the metal stick dip into the test tube that fills with water and measures the
temperature. Compare the temperature of the victim with the time by using Logger Pro to graph the
temperature scale and the time. After finished the graph, we had to calculate the body temperature of
the victim by applying the formula: Ae^(-Ct) + B.

Actions Taken
When we first saw the crime scene, we investigated the situation whether it was suicide or murder
by observing the scene. We also asked the witness for more pre-scene details. After that, we took
some photos in order to support our hypothesis. During the scene, we came up with questions that
may help us in our investigation such as
1. Why there is blood on the table?
2. Why there is a surgical blade?
3. Why there is a cup of coffee with a bottle of Percocet there?
4. Will caffeine interact with drugs?
5. Why didn’t the victim wear shoes?
6. Why the victim didn’t wear a lab coat as he was a scientist and working laboratory?
During our investigation, we noticed that a cup of coffee is put beside a bottle of Percocet. As we
collected all of the evidence we need, we have decided how the experiments going to be like. First, we
decided to do the blood test by using Gel Electrophoresis. For the second experiment, we tested on the
presence of drugs in the blood. Lastly, we calculate the time of death by testing the victim’s body
temperature.
Test Results

Test: Blood test - Gel Electrophoresis

1st roll: Blood sample from the dead body (victim)

2nd roll: Blood sample on the floor
3rd roll: Blood sample on the table

+ Result: From the process of gel electrophoresis, it evaluates that all blood samples come from
the victim.

Test: Presence of Drugs in blood

+ Control positive group: Percocet solution (pH: 3)
+ Control negative group: Starch solution (pH: 5)
➔ The unknown solution extracted from the victim’s blood: positive result (turn out
slightly dark purple when reacting with FeCl3), in which the same with Percocet
control group, with the pH of 3.
Test: Time of Death (Body Temperature)

Equation: Body Temporature = Ae^(-Ct) + B

** A = Temp Diff = 26.16

B = Room Temperature = 21.31
C = Constant = 0.1003
Given body temperature of the victim is 31 degree celsius

Equation: 31 = (26.16)e^(-0.1003t) + 21.31

t = 9.901 minutes

+ Result: The victim had died for almost 10 minutes (9.901 minutes) by the time we arrived.
Investigation Results

In this case, we assume that it is an accident. It was not a suicide because people who decide to
commit a suicide, usually write their last letter, but there was no last letter in the scene. In addition,
the victim did not seem to have the motivation to commit suicide, the content in his diary was just a
complaint of his boss. Although there is a sign of others' appearance in the laboratory since the last
sentence of the victim’s diary was not completed as someone probably came in while the victim was
writing it, the pieces of evidence such as fingerprint and blood samples emphasize that there was the
presence of only one person in the scene which is the victim. As we could collect evidence from the
scene, it means that the scene was not cleaned, the objects on the table were pretty neat, and there was
no sign of fighting. Therefore, this case probably not a murder. Other than that, we have done an
experiment on the presence of medication, Percocet, which is a pain reliever, but it affects people to
be dizzy, unusually tired and might have unusual behavior since it contains opium. Furthermore, the
victim had caffeine from coffee, which increases the rate of medication absorption. As a result, the
victim’s condition got worst that he could get the seizure and be unconscious, and it might happen
when he was using a scalpel. Therefore, the scalpel stabbed on his subclavian artery near the right
clavicle, which leads to loss of blood.
