16TH - 20TH JUNE

SPACE 10
FOREWORD

Thank you all for joining us at the MADE AGAIN CHALLENGE.

MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

It is a true privilege to have here such a great variety of talents and

trailblazers – makers and designers of all kinds – from Älmhult,
Barcelona and the rest of the world.

Human beings have made since we were able to think,

but now is the time to re-think the way we make.
Bringing together amazing people – who don’t usually work together
– around a common vision, and on the same playground, sounded
like a good way to get a taste at a better future.

The MADE AGAIN CHALLENGE is about more than just giving a

second chance to products on their way to the landfills, it is about
tapping into converging forces, technologies and trends to change
our linear way of thinking fabrication and our wasteful reflexes.

Our industrial model has allowed some people to own in abun-

dance. But as those are reaching a peak in consumption, the whole
system is also reaching its physical limits. The model – that was
designed at a time where we had easy access to raw materials and
cheap energy – is growing old, fast.

We are evolving this linear thinking, and aiming for a more integrat-
ed and responsible approach. Sustainable materials, new recycling
processes, ubiquitous computation and connectivity, digital fabri-
cation or synthetic biology, are some of the technologies that could
help speed up the process.

2
This change will not be based on competition,

MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

it will be based on open collaboration.
This is why Space10 and the Fab City Research Laboratory joined
forces and created the MADE AGAIN CHALLENGE. In June 2016 we
are bringing together the industry, local makers, entrepreneurs and
designers to experiment a possible future of (re-)production. We
created the largest fab city prototype to date, and turned the district
of Poblenou into a 1000m2 playground, where we can access a
distributed network of facilities, machines, sustainable materials
and experts.

For the next few days we will experience a possible future of pro-
duction, at a local scale, where we can connect talents, resources
and infrastructure to think with our hands and maybe open up the
way for a new paradigm to flourish elsewhere and everywhere.

We can’t wait to take this journey with you!

PLAYGROUND
The MADE AGAIN CHALLENGE is setting camp in Poblenou

MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

(new town) – an exclusive life-sized fab city experiment!

Designed as a 1000m2 playground, this distributed network of

fab labs, spaces, machines and people will be our home for a
week of making, living, and re-thinking.

Poblenou is an old industrial neighbourhood in Barcelona

where many factories used to thrive decades ago. Today, after
going through somewhat of a rough patch, the whole district
is regenarating and reinventing local production for modern
ages. It is the home of many makers, creatives and of Fab Lab
Barcelona at IAAC, the headquarters of the international Fab
Lab network and the Fab City project.

We are not just running a workshop in Poblenou, we are

prototyping a one square kilometre Fab City. And for the next
few days we get to experience and get of taste of the largest
existing experimentation of a new urban model designed for a
better future.

MATERIALS
Solidwool

Solidwool is a strong and unique composite material that introduc-

es a new way of working with wool. It is similar to fibreglass, but
uses wool as the reinforcement instead of glass, and bio-resins as
the binder. Therefore, it functions as an alternative to both injection
moulded plastics and fibreglass.

MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

Solidwool’s manufacturing methods are designed to have the
lowest environmental impact possible and uses resources currently
available. Solidwool aims to manufacture the most natural and high-
est quality wool composite material, with the lowest environmental
impact, and wants to be considered as a sustainable alternative to
today’s petrochemical-based structural reinforced plastics.

world’s natural resources in a careless way.
MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

Tras(h)umanity isn’t a utopian term. It is an awareness of trash. We

are looking for a new generation of conscious consumers who are
not willing to reject their aesthetic values.

They create objects that make your life more enjoyable without
damaging our relationship with nature. And we do it by erasing part
of the ecological footprint that is fouling the world.

ECOALF wants to share with you its passion for beautiful, useful
products that clean up the planet. Help us take the concept of trash
into the future.

Precious Plastic

A lot of things we have are made from plastic. The synthetic mate-
rial is used everywhere, but it also ends up everywhere – mostly in
landfills. Of all the plastic thrown away, we recycle just ten percent.
Now Dutch designer Dave Hakkens is on a mission to boost that
number, by letting people in every corner of the world know they
MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

can start their own local little plastic recycling workshop.

Using basic tools and materials, he has developed a series of DIY

machines that enable everyone to work with plastic waste. Ma-
chines include a plastic shredder, extruder, injection moulder and
rotational moulder, which are all based on industrial machines but
modified to be less complex and more flexible.

The machines are made with basic tooling and materials that should
be easily available, wherever you live. They are made of different
components that can be repaired, replaced or customized.

TerraCycle

TerraCycle is Eliminating the Idea of Waste® by recycling the

“non-recyclable.” Whether it’s coffee capsules from your home,
pens from a school or plastic gloves from a manufacturing facility,
TerraCycle can collect and recycle almost any form of waste.

MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

We partner with individual collectors such as yourself, as well as
major consumer product companies, retailers, manufacturers,
municipalities, and small businesses across 20 different countries.
With your help, we are able to divert millions of pounds of waste
from landfills and incinerators each month.

Bioplastics

Bioplastics are plastics derived from renewable biomass sources,

such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch or microbiota. Bioplas-
tics can be made from agricultural byproducts and also from used
plastic bottles and other containers using microorganisms. Bioplas-
tics are often used for disposable items, such as cutlery, pots, bowls
MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

and straws, as well as for bags, trays, packaging and bottling.

Bioplastics are also used in non-disposable applications including

mobile phone casings, carpet fibers, insulation car interiors, fuel
lines and plastic piping. Furthermore, new electroactive bioplastics
are being developed that can be used to carry electric current. In
these areas, the goal is not biodegradability but to create items from
sustainable resources.

The bioplastics we will be using are based on an open source reci-

pe of water, vinegar, glycerin and cornstarch and are developed by
The Materiability Research Network.

MATERIALS
New Filaments

Today there is a big variety of new types of filaments being produced

in the world. They are produced to be more sustainable in produc-
tion and usage, and/or to offer new material qualities that might be
useful for future 3D printing and new usage of 3D printed objects.

MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

The new filaments we have for you to experiment with are:

Algae filament
Magnetic filament
Wood filament
Conductive filament
Recycled plastic filaments
Lay-Brick
Glow-In-The-Dark
FilaFlex

Mushroom Dye

Mushrooms can be used to create natural color dyes via color-

extraction with a solvent. Some of the vivid colors we see in mush-
rooms are extractable in water and can be used to permanently
dye protein fibers like wool and silk. They can also be applied to a
surface as paint. Others need stronger solvents, often ammonia.
MADE AGAIN BARCELONA – JUNE 16TH - 20TH 2016

The shingled hedgehog mushroom and related species contain

blue-green pigments, which are used for dyeing wool in Norway.
The fruiting body of Hydnellum peckii can be used to produce a
beige color when no mordant is used, and shades of blue or green
depending on the mordant added. Phaeolus schweinitzii produces
green, yellow, gold or brown colors, depending on the material dyed
and the mordant used.
