 Hyundai Motor is the sixth largest automaker in the world and the largest
automaker in Korea.

 Hyundai is also one of the biggest Korean groups (Chaebol) in Korea, second
only to Samsung.

2. Company History
 Hyundai Motor Company was later established in 1967 by Chung Ju Yung.

Chung Ju Yung

 The company's first model, the Cortina, was released in cooperation with Ford Motor
Company in 1968.

 When Hyundai wanted to develop their own car, they hired George Turnbull in
February 1974, the former Managing Director of Austin Morris at British Leyland. He
in turn hired five other top British car engineers.

 In 1975, the Pony, the first South Korean car, was released, with styling by Giorgio
Giugiaro of ItalDesign and powertrain technology provided by Japan's Mitsubishi

Motors. Exports began in the following year to Ecuador and soon thereafter to the
Benelux countries.

 In 1984, Hyundai exported the Pony to Canada, and it was at one point the top-
selling car on the Canadian market. In 1985, the one millionth Hyundai car was built.

 In 1986, Hyundai began to sell cars in the United States, and the Excel was nominated
as "Best Product #10" by Fortune magazine. The company began to produce models
with its own technology in 1988, beginning with the midsize Sonata.

 In 1991, the company succeeded in developing its first proprietary gasoline engine,
thus paving the way for technological independence.

 In 1996, Hyundai Motor India Limited was established with a production plant in
Irungattukottai near Chennai, India.

 In 1998, Hyundai acquired the majority of rival KIA Motors. Hyundai owns 33.88% of
KIA.

 In 1999, Chung Ju Yung transferred leadership of Hyundai Motor to his son, Chung
Mong Koo.

 In 2000, the company established a strategic alliance with DaimlerChrysler and


severed its partnership with the Hyundai Group. In 2001, the Daimler-Hyundai Truck
Corporation was formed.

 Since 2002, Hyundai has also been one of the worldwide official sponsors of the FIFA
World Cup.

 In 2004, DaimlerChrysler divested its interest in the company by selling its 10.5%
stake for $900 million. However, Hyundai still was ranked second in "initial quality" in
a survey by J.D. Power and Associates. Hyundai Motor Company had $57.2 billion in
sales in South Korea making it the country's second largest corporation (chaebol).

 In 2011, Hyundai sold 4.05 million cars worldwide and the Hyundai Motor Group was
the world's fourth largest automaker. Hyundai vehicles are sold in 193 countries
through some 5,000 dealerships.

 Hyundai has six research and development centers, located in South Korea (three
offices), Germany, Japan and India. Additionally, a center in California develops
designs for the United States. Hyundai has invested in manufacturing plants in North
America, India, the Czech Republic, Russia, China and Turkey as well as research and
development centers in Europe, Asia, North America and the Pacific Rim.

Chung Mong Koo

7.2a Generality

 Chairman & CEO: Chung Mong KooChung Mong Koo is the chairman and CEO of
Hyundai Motor Group. Chung succeeded his father, Chung Ju Yung, the founder of
the conglomerate known as the Hyundai Group. When the conglomerate split into
several parts in 1999, Chung Mong Koo took over the Hyundai Motor division.

 He was convicted of embezzlement and breach of fiduciary duty in February 2007,


but was given a suspended sentence and was fully pardoned by President Lee Myung
Bak.

 As of March 2014, his net worth was $6.8 billion according to Forbes.

12.1 Step 1: Planning

 Designer: Luc Donckerwolke and Kevin Kang

 They want to produce a battery electric version, with a 200 to 250 mile range, is
expected to be released in Korea in 2018, with a market debut in the United States
likely in 2019.

 Hyundai has set a target of 12,000 pre-orders for the KONA electric SUV by April
2018.

12.2 Step 2: Writing

 Commercial films of Boyband EXO for this model was first announced on Korean TV
in January 2018.

 On February 27, Hyun Kona Electric was officially unveiled, this event was Hyundai
livestream live on social networks.

 Hyundai Kona Electric has officially launched in Geneva 2018 exhibition opening on
March 6, 2018.

12.3 Step 3: Completing

 The actual pre-order amount exceeds 150% of their target. Hyundai has received
over 18,000 pre-orders for this model since January 15, 2018 in Korea. So they later
announced they would not receive any more orders in Korea.

 In the UK, Kona Electric SUV is priced at £ 25,000. This car was launched from the
beginning of August 2018.

 Hyundai Kona Electric will be available in the US market in the first half of 2019, with
a standard price of less than $ 40,000.

 Hyundai Kona Electric will reach the Indian market in 2019 as the first EV electric
vehicle in Hyundai.

13. Recommendations
 Be more creative in car models.

 Promote the production and research of environmentally friendly vehicles.

 Open factories in China to be able to use low cost and huge labors in China.

 Taking advantage of the Korean idol kpop trend with famous idols who are having a
great influence in Korea and Japan for advertising to increase Hyundai’s sales in
Korea and Japan.

14. Conclusion
Hyundai in particular and Chaebols in general played a huge role in removing Korea from
poverty after the Korean War. And today, Hyundai and Chaebols still have the support of
many Koreans, who believe that Hyundai and Chaebols has once again lifted Korea out of a
financial crisis.
