Go and Chess

Go is an ancient Chinese board game for two players. It is called “Weiqi” in China and
“Baduk” in Korea. According to historical records, people started playing Go as early as the
5th century B.C. It is one of the most popular board games in East Asia, and it has also gained
popularity in the rest of the world since the end of the 19th century. Even though Go has
simple rules, it is considered a very challenging board game for people of all ages.

Go is usually played by two players taking turns to place black and white stones on the grid
of a wooden board. The players use the stones to compete for territory on the board. The
player who captures the most territory wins the game. To reduce the areas controlled by the
opponent, each player has to surround the opponent’s stones with his or hers. It requires a lot
of strategic planning, patience and intelligence.

Chess, on the other hand, has been a popular and competitive board game in the West for
centuries. Today, chess is one of the world’s most popular games played by millions of people
on the Internet or in professional tournaments.

Like Go, chess is also a game played by two players and requires a lot of strategic planning.
The game is played on a square checkered chessboard with 64 squares. At the start, each
player controls 16 white or black pieces—one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two
bishops and eight pawns. The objective of the game is to “checkmate” the opponent, which
means capturing the opponent’s king. Each player has to prepare attacks against the other
player’s pieces and to make sure each move will help him win the game.
