Optimization of Well Production System by NODAL Analysis Technique

Introduction
Nodal Analysis is used in production platforms to forecast the performance of the various
elements comprising the completion and production system. It is a systems approach to the
optimization of oil and gas wells, and is used to evaluate thoroughly a complete producing
system. Every component in a producing well or all wells in a producing system can be
optimized to achieve the objective flow rate most economically. The objectives of nodal analysis
is to evaluate the flow rate at which an existing oil or gas wells that produce considering
wellbore geometry and completion limitations, to determine under what flow conditions a well
will load or die, to select the most economical time for the installation of artificial lift and to
assist in the selection of the optimum lift method. The production optimization of oil and gas
wells by nodal systems analysis has contributed to improved completion techniques, production
and efficiency for many wells. The amount of oil and gas produced from the reservoir to the
surface depends on the total pressure drop in the production system, and the pressure drop in the
system depends on the amount of fluid flowing through the system. Consequently, the entire
production system must be analysed as a unit or system.

Instruction
Based on the reservoir rock and fluid properties of a selected field, size and depth of reservoir,
the best nodal analysis can be obtained to find the inflow and outflow curve. The best strategy
contains economic meaning as well. You are a Petroleum engineer in an oil and gas company
and you are asked to design innovative solutions by nodal analysis technique of a field in order
to find the flow rate and well pressure based on the instructions given below.
1. Choose a field and identify the fluid and rock properties to solve this complex
engineering problem. (10 marks)
2. Identify the Nodal Analysis method for the complex engineering problem. (10 marks)
3. Calculate the flowrate at different tubing and flowline sizes using Nodal Analysis and
PROSPER for the complex engineering problem. (15 marks)
4. Explain the calculation of the nodal analysis through analysis of well pressure on Nodal
Analysis and the PROSPER software (40 marks)

5. Outline the summary of your analysis by giving an interpretation of the case and the
analysis. (10 marks)
6. Breakdown a summary of your analysis in a 10-15 minute presentation for the complex
engineering problem. (15 marks)

*Lecturer will monitor the feasibility of the field data based on the research done by
student.

Grading Criteria:
Organize your work in a report detailing your findings. You may include any relevant
calculation, illustration, graph or table to support your work. Appendix A attached are the
general requirements for the report. Appendix B attached are the instructions given for
conducting referencing and Appendix C is the grading criteria for this assignment.

Explaining the importance of nodal analysis (10 marks)

Choose a field and evaluate the fluid and rock properties of that field to obtain the parameters for
nodal analysis to solve this complex engineering problem.

Evaluate the nodal analysis method based on your field of study (10 marks)
Select the method on conducting the nodal analysis for the complex engineering problem on your
field of study based on the rock and fluid properties. You are required to calculate the flowrates
of that field corresponding to the bottom hole pressures using Nodal Analysis.

Calculations on Nodal Analysis (15 marks)

All two sections in this section should be explicitly shown with the principles learnt on this
complex engineering problem.
When performing the calculations, you are required to:
1. Calculate the flowrate at different tubing and flowline sizes using Nodal Analysis and
PROSPER for the complex engineering problem. (5 marks)
2. Examine the wellhead pressures and surface choke design using PROSPER for the
complex engineering problem. (10 marks)
Explanation on calculation of the nodal analysis (40 marks)
Based on the calculations performed on nodal analysis, you must explain a reasonable
justification on your choice of flowrates, tubing and flowline size, wellhead pressures, surface

choke design, flow restrictions, subsurface safety valve design and well stimulation treatments
by understanding how to obtain the operating point for the well using PROSPER. Your
justification must be backed up with latest technologies on your innovative design solutions. All
six sections in this section should be explicitly shown with the principles learnt on this complex
engineering problem.

When performing the calculations, you are required to:

1. Examine the effects of reservoir pressure depletion in this complex engineering problem.
(5 marks)
2. Illustrate the flow restrictions that exist in a well in this complex engineering problem. (5
marks
3. Develop the sensitivity analysis based on the tubing and flowline size using PROSPER
software as the design innovative solution. (10 marks)
4. Identify the water cut and the gas oil ratio of the well using PROSPER software as the
design innovative solution. (5 marks)
5. Compare well stimulation treatments as an innovative solution to increase production
rates. (5 marks)
6. Calculate the well pressure after obtaining inflow and outflow curve using PROSPER
software as the design innovative solution. (10 marks)

Outline a summary of the solution for the problem given (10 marks)
In this section, you should outline a brief summary and interpretation of the case and the
analysis. It will be assessed individually.

Tutor Assessment (15 marks)

Explain your innovative design solution in a 10-15 minutes presentation session to solve the
complex engineering problem.

Feasibility of Field Data

The student is required to obtain the field data from the internet. You are required to complete
element a within a given period. Failure to do so will be awarded zero mark for that specific
element. Table 1 shows the scheduled checkpoint for feasibility of field data used.

APPENDIX B

Instructions to Students on Discussion, Conclusion and References

Discussion
In the Discussion section you should give an overall evaluation of the results of your work,
including the validity of the results. It is here that you will have the best opportunity to
demonstrate your understanding of the work and to give a critical account of what challenges
you were facing and your solution to these challenges for the assignment completion. Discussion
must follow or approaching theory/hypothesis.

Conclusion
The Conclusion is a short summary of the results of your work (about 100 words). The
Conclusion should follow naturally from the Discussion. It should give a concise statement of
what has been achieved. Anticipated application of techniques developed should be summarized
very briefly. The Conclusion should be self-contained, i.e., it should not make reference to any
sections, figures, or references in the report.

References
All references to books, papers, and other publications must be fully and correctly quoted to be
useful to the reader. Please refer to the Quick Harvard Referencing Guide document in APU
Library Homepage for guidance on referencing and citation.
