Q1 An elevated water tank as shown in Figure Q1 (a) was designed to supply treated
water to UTHM Parit Raja Campus. The water tank column shown in Figure Q1 (b)
has a length of l = 90 m and is made of reinforced concrete with the Young’s
modulus, E = 30 GPa. The column has a tubular cross section of inner diameter 2.4 m
and outer diameter 3 m. The tank has a mass, m = 3 x 105 kg when filled with water.
Assuming that the water tank will be subjected under transverse vibration:

(a) Draw the equivalent spring mass system of the water tank design. Neglect the
damping effect and mass of the column.
(3 marks)

(b) Determine the natural frequency of the water tank design

(4 marks)

(c) If the water tank is subjected to an external force coming from the wind which
can be expressed in a function of F(t) = 1000 cos 0.99t, evaluate the maximum
amplitude of vibration due to the effect of the wind and predict the phenomena
that will occurred on the water tank based on the frequency ratio.
(6 marks)

(d) Using appropriate solution of vibration response, estimate the vibration

response of the water tank at t = 3 s and t = 8 s. Use initial displacement x0 = 0
m and initial velocity ẋ0 = 0.4 m/s. Explain briefly what would happened to the
water tank based on the comparison of vibration response at t = 3 s and t = 8 s.
(12 marks)

Q2 Figure Q2 illustrates a schematic model of seismograph system: device to records

earthquakes. Assuming that is too small for the model, and given = 9.81 m/s2 and
a moment of inertia for simple pendulum is = :
