Hello! Welcome to my Classroom

Philosophical
Statement
Ms. Watson’s Philosophical
Statement:
*This is just an hour and a half block schedule of the first part of the first day of school*
On the first day of school I will be sending my students home
with a take home folder containing this About The Teacher
Page. I will go through this in class and let students ask any
questions but I will also send it home for parents along with
classroom expectations and procedures.

I would use this “All About Me” book templet
on the first day of school as a way to familiarize
myself with my students. I think this is a good way
to get to know each student without making them
nervous or shy by doing an ice breaker that involves
introducing themselves to the class. I would also
allow students to share voluntarily.

A teacher mail box will be placed in the classroom. I
will take time to explain that the mail box is for letters
to Ms. Watson that are private or just suggestions. I
will explain that this will be used as a tool and issues
brought forward by students will be addressed as whole
group so no one is singled out. I will also include that
“Shout Outs” for when someone does well, will be read
out from here once a week.

Classroom Policies/
Procedures
General Procedures to Introduce to My Class:
www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-post/zimmerman
In my class I hope to promote safety. With safety
comes some rules and guidelines. I hope to have a base for
my classroom rules and have my students build their own
classroom constitution. They need to feel that our rules
are their social contract, supporting their “inalienable
rights” as students in a caring community. I would start
out with the 5 general ideas listed in my discipline system
and have my students help me elaborate.
Other Classroom Procedures:
Steps to Address
Misbehavior/
Disciple System
These rules would be where I start my classroom
constitution. I would discuss why they are important
to me and allow my students to add to these.
I plan to use classroom jobs and salaries as my
behavior system. Each student is given their salary
and they will use it to either buy treats, go to
events for the class or it can be sued to pay fines
(behavior tickets/Think Sheets). Warning will be
given and after warning fines will be administered.
Prices of fines will be based on the offense. This will
hopefully encourage good behavior as losing
“money” will result in loss of privileges.

If a Think Sheet doesn’t correct bad behavior the
next course of action is contacting parents. I will
send this letter home with a child and require
parents sign and write a short response. This will be
explained to parent’s prior in the classroom
information book.

As part of my behavior system students will receive
rewards at the end of each month if they have not
had any tickets for misbehaving or being off task.
These would include additional recess time, lunch
with Ms. Watson and a friend or 5th grade kickball
game. As long as the students chart isn’t marked
with a ticket they will be able to participate in
monthly activities.

Section 7:
Student Motivation
A Homework Club will be used to motivate students to
get their weekly homework. (assigned Monday, giving
ample time to complete) A chart will be created and
students will start with their name on the chart. Each
week after homework is turned in names will be
removed if homework isn’t completed or turned in on
time. At the end of the month students with their
name still posted will receive a salary ‘bonus’. This will
begin again monthly giving all students time to
accomplish throughout the school year.

I want to write motivation quotes or messages each
Friday morning on my student’s desks using a paint
pen. This will encourage them more and more
importantly remind them that they are cared for and
important to my classroom. I will also write birthday
wishes on desks throughout the year.

Section 8:
Class Engagement

Brain Breaks!
I hope to implement the brain breaks into my
classroom. I would be sure to use them when my students
start to get antsy. Using these brain breaks would really help
to break up the day between activity and get blood flowing
to my student’s brain. I would use these as engagement in
my classroom.
Classroom Jobs
This is by far going to be one of my favorite things to
implement into my classroom! I saw this in observations. I like
how the children get the opportunity to have a ‘job’ and with
that job comes a salary and responsibilities. The students can be
completely engaged throughout the day while this behavior
system is in place. This also reinforces their involvement in
THEIR classroom not just Ms. Watson’s classroom. This is
completely inclusive and each child can choose their job. I would
be sure to rotate jobs after every grading period.
