THE SUPERVISORY TEAM
OUT & ABOUT
AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES ROCKET
COMPETITION (AURC)

The competition defines two power classes with teams to select either the 10,000ft or
30,000ft category. Teams are required to design and build these rockets to achieve
an altitude as close as possible to the target – with penalties imposed for over or
undershooting the altitude goal.

HIVE is competing in the 30,000ft category and currently leads the competition.

The scientific payload component of the competition is the first of its kind in the world
and is what makes AURC stand out from other similar international events. This
requires that teams design and build a novel and innovative scientific experiment to
be carried to the specified altitude.

Outreach
Goals:
We seek to open doors to those unable to open them
themselves. We believe that equality within the STEM field
is essential to achieving the best that can be done for all
humanity, and that opening minds from an early age is
fundamental to this.
We aim to embolden the younger generation, especially
girls, into knowing that they are capable of achieving great
things within the STEM fields, using rocketry as a stepping
stone to achieve this, as well as teaching about all the
integral forgotten women of Space in the hopes that the
next generation will not be.
Our outreach program
Current program/projects:
The Asteria Project is the current running program, it consists of a two day
weekend program where kids and their parents come in and learn about the
fundamentals of rocket building, aerodynamics, chemistry, range safety, and
about the cool things that people have been doing in space. They walk away
from day one with a fully constructed LPR (Low Powered Rocket) ready to
launch on day two.
We are looking to expand this program in future to include electronics, coding
and 3D printing for older groups.

Roles:
Outreach development
Outreach coordinator

Requirements:
Working with childrens check
A passion for teaching and caring for the next generation of scientists and
engineers.
SO, WHAT’S HAPPENING IN 2019?
VICTORIAN UNIVERSITIES
ROCKETRY COMPETITION
We are looking for 20 individuals to form teams of 3 for the 2019 Victorian Universities
Rocketry Competition.

Each team will compete in two phases between now and October 2019:

Phase 1: Build and successfully launch a specified kit rocket on a G class motor including the
submission of a short (2 page) build report

Phase 2: Modify the nose cone from the kit flown in phase 1 to house an altimeter and GPS
tracking device and fly on an H class motor to obtain your level 1 rocketry certification.
AND

LAST

BUT, NOT LEAST

...
- We are expanding our outreach programs to encourage diversity and
inclusion in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)

- We are engaging with industry, media and government to deliver real

networking opportunities

- We are integrating RMIT student research projects

- We are launching rockets, stepping closer to our 100km goal every
