Defensive Driving Course Outline

Course Aims
 Defensive driving is easier and more economical because the Arabian Training & Safety have
developed an updated defensive driving course based on proven content from the prestigious
institutions in Oman. Since the establishment of Arabian Training Institute lots of drivers have learned
to protect themselves and their families with courses, featuring the most comprehensive, in-depth
driver-training curriculum based on the instructor-led courses from the ATS.

Course Objectives
 The Defensive Driving Course uses state-of-the-art animation, sound and graphics in an engaging,
interactive learning environment where students analyse real driving situations, spot driving hazards,
identify, and execute the correct defences. The convenient bookmark feature offers the ability to log
in and out of the course as often as you like to accommodate your schedule.
 At the end of the training the driver should be able to –

 Perform all pre-driving checks.


 Drive the vehicle safely, lawfully, and correctly whilst interacting with other traffic.
 Keep a safe space on all sides of the vehicle in all traffic conditions.
 Observe, recognise, and correctly respond to all potential and actual hazards, and use
the most effective hazard approach procedure.
 Communicate correctly and appropriately with other road users.
 Drive the vehicle economically and at a speed commensurate with the condition of the
load, road, traffic, and environmental conditions.
 Give an appropriate commentary whilst driving.
 Manoeuvre safely and efficiently in a restricted space.

 Determine your driving profile.
 List the three basic steps in the Defensive Driving Course Collision Prevention Formula
 Explain the ‘What if?’ strategy.

Ready for the Road
 List the factors that you can control before you start to drive, including your own physical and
emotional/mental conditions, as well as vehicle maintenance.
 Describe the varying physical, emotional and mental conditions of other drivers on the road.
 Explain how to be alert and defensive when sharing the road with these drivers.
 Explain how to drive defensively in conditions beyond your control—such as light, weather, road
conditions and traffic mix.

Don’t add Insult to Injury


 Describe the characteristics of impaired, distracted, fatigued and aggressive drivers.
 Identify actions you can take when you experience or encounter these characteristics on
the road.
 Employ techniques to manage your emotions and behaviour while driving.

Success on Road
 List the six most unsafe driving behaviours.
 Describe the hazards involved with each of the unsafe driving behaviours.
 List alternatives to speeding.
 Explain how to safely approach and proceed through intersections.
 Explain how to make safe and legal turns.
 Explain the steps needed to complete a safe pass.
 Determine a safe following distance.

Collison Proofing

 Apply the Defensive Driving Course Collision Prevention Formula.


 Explain the ‘What If?’ strategy.
 Recognize the hazards in collision scenarios.
 Identify standard road signs colors and shapes.
 Identify reasonable steps that might have prevented real-life collisions.

Driving for Life

 List the ten habits of defensive driving.


 Identify personal behaviors and decisions you will make in future driving situations to
avoid collisions and violations.

Assessment Methodology
Eye test – delegate should pass the eye test check to be able to sit for the course.
Practical – correctly perform all pre-use Equipment checks, operate safely on a specific or variety
of tasks, control the equipment correctly, observe & recognise hazards correctly, maintain correct
safe working zone, stop the equipment safely. Operating time and task will be recorded for each
delegate for quality assurance purposes.

Maximum class size: 8 delegates

Target Population: For employees required to operate & Drive light vehicle

Languages Available: Arabic, English, and Hindi.

Certification: ID style certification card issued.

Items to bring: ID / ROP License, passport size photograph.

PPE to bring: The delegate must bring: safety footwear, coverall, hard hat, gloves, HI-VIS vest.

Equipment: delegate shall provide appropriate training equipment, having all necessary
accessories, safety equipment, and certification; maintained in accordance with
the manufacturers specifications; and shall be sufficiently fuelled at
commencement of every training session.

ATS shall provide the classroom having modern and comfortable seating
arrangements for all delegates, with all normal modern teaching facilities, i.e.
computer with necessary peripherals, data projector, whiteboard, etc.

Sustenance: ATS shall supply a nutritious lunch and adequate refreshments during breaks.
