DESIGN OVERVIEW INTRODUCTION

The planning process of most projects can be iterative and thereby

Tier 3 project itself, but also on the performance, reliability, and efficiency of the
data center over its lifetime.

Facility Power
FACILITY POWER BLOCK DIAGRAM The facility power system supplies power to the critical and non-critical
components within the data center. In this Tier 3 design, each IT hall is
supplied by a 2500kW power block with 2N redundancy and 100%-rated
electrical equipment.
The power blocks, backed up by a 2N generator configuration, provide 2N
UPS power to the IT. Inside each power block a 3000 amp main bus feeds
a 1500 kW Galaxy VX UPS with 2.6 minutes of runtime, which feeds a 2000
amp QED-2 switchboard, to provide power to the IT pods. The main bus
also feeds one 500kW Galaxy VX UPS with 10.5 minutes of runtime, which
feeds one 800 amp QED-2 Switchboard, which then feeds a 700 amp I-Line
panelboard, to provide power to the Ecoflair units. This UPS is to provide
continuous cooling and to prevent temperature in the IT hall to rise above
ASHRAE’s allowable limit of 89.6°F after power interruption.
By default, the Ecoflair 250 kW unit’s with 125kW DX trim cooling will take
12 minutes to reach full cooling capacity after power interruption, during this
time unit can only supplement cooling with evaporative cooling. Restart time
can be adjusted to be as low as 2 minutes; this will result in a higher in-rush

FACILITY COOLING BLOCK DIAGRAM

Facility Cooling
The facility cooling design is comprised of 9 Ecoflair Air Economizers 250 kW units
with 125 kW DX trim cooling that deliver clean and conditioned supply air to each IT
hall with N+1 (by unit) redundancy. The Ecoflair units are placed along the
perimeter of the IT hall and supply conditioned air to a common supply plenum
along each IT hall.
Hot return air from the IT equipment is ducted to a common ceiling plenum, from
which each Ecoflair unit draws air, using air-to-air heat exchange when ambient
temperatures are favorable to supply the data center with a flood of cool air through
grates at the perimeter of the IT room.
When ambient temperatures are less favorable and an air-to-air heat exchange
alone is not sufficient to cool the data center, the Ecoflair units supplement the free
cooling with indirect evaporative cooling – removing heat from the IT air by
evaporating water on the outside of the heat exchanger channels. In the case of a
primary water supply failure, a common 7,133-gallon storage tank for all the units
for one IT hall can supply water for 12 hours of evaporative cooling.
In circumstances of extreme ambient temperatures, a refrigerant loop in each
Ecoflair module activates, using direct expansion cooling to maintain the desired IT
space temperature. Regardless of which cooling mode is being used (air-to-air free
ECOFLAIR COOLING UNITS cooling, indirect evaporative, or direct expansion), the Ecoflair units always prevent
the outside air from mixing with the data center air.
This design is instrumented to work with EcoStruxure IT Expert for monitoring and
control, and EcoStruxure IT Advisor for operations. Further design details such as
dimensions, equipment placement, temperature set points, pipe sizing, flow rates,
and pressure drops are available in the engineering package
Note: for designs in cooler climates like Montreal, can remove one Ecoflair 250 kW
unit.

IT HALL LAYOUT
IT Space
Two IT halls make up the entire IT space of this design. Each hall consists of
14 IT pods housing 20 racks. Each rack can support a density of 5 kW, for a
total of 100 kW per pod, 1400 kW per IT hall, with 2.8 MW worth of IT capacity
in aggregate.
The IT halls are designed to allow for pod-by-pod deployment, since the
supporting system and hot aisle containment is provisioned for each pod by
the HyperPod containment system, allowing racks to be fully populated and
rolled in place. Deploying HyperPod increases the cooling efficiency of the N+1
perimeter cooling units while it also provides a robust structural system to
support power cabling and equipment, among other advantages.
Each IT pod is powered by 2N floor mount modular power distribution units
(PDUs) with isolation transformers to step the 480 V from the UPS down to
208 V. Each rack is configured with two metered rack-mount PDU to enable
remote monitoring of the units for efficiency and capacity management.
The security of the room can be maintained at multiple points with NetBotz
systems installed on the HyperPod frames. At the rack level, access is
controlled by a door lock and sensor and at the room level, security cameras
are utilized for monitoring.
