Operation Manual for DM

System description
The system is a skid mounted DM unit having facilities for two stage cation and
anion unit. The system is engineered for water having dissolved solid level within
500 mg/liter. The capacity of the system is 50-100litre/hr
The system removes dissolved salts from water which operates on the principle of
ion exchange. The dissolved ions both cation and anion of soluble salts are
replaced by hydrogen and hydroxyl ions respectively in cation exchanger and
anion exchanger which ultimately converts both ions into a pure water molecule.
The exhausted cation exchanger and anion exchanger beds are regenerated by
hydrochloric acid and caustic soda solutions respectively. The water which will
come out ultimately from the last bed shall be salt free.

Operational Procedure

Pre start checking up

1. Ensure all the units, valves are in operating condition.
2. Ensure the uninterrupted water supply from the over head tank.

Start up Operation
1. First open the main supply inlet valve to the plant and ensure uninterrupted
water supply to the system from water source or reservoir (overhead tank).
2. Next open the inlet & outlet valve of cation unit (1st) and discharge initial water
in up-rinse mode for a few minutes.
3. Then transfer the line of cation unit (1st) to inlet of the anion unit (1st).
4. Open the inlet & outlet valve of anion unit (1st) and discharge initial water in
up-rinse mode.
5. Adjust the flow rate by controlling inlet valve of cation unit (1st).
6. Check water quality at outlet of anion unit (1st).
7. When quality reaches as per set standard, transfer water line to inlet of cation
unit (2nd).
8. Open inlet & outlet valve of cation unit (2nd) and discharge initial water in up-
rinse mode for few minutes.
9. Next transfer the water line from cation unit (2nd) to inlet of anion unit (2nd).
10. Open the inlet & outlet valve of anion unit (2nd) and discharge initial water in
up-rinse mode for few minutes.
11. Check outlet quality. When the quality reaches as per set limit, transfer the
water to the process or final collection tank.

Stop Operation
1. Check water quality in regular interval at the outlet of anion unit (1st) & anion
unit (2nd) of both streams.
2. When quality start deteriorating, stop operation. Close all inlet & outlet valves
of the units.
3. Start chemical regeneration of cation & anion unit for respective stream.

Chemical Regeneration Procedure

Cation Exchange Regeneration

1. Preparing acid solution
Take 2.5 Kg HCl (30%) in acid solution tank and add 7.5 litre DM or Cation
free water for dilute the concentration to 6-7.5%.

2. Start acid Injection

Open first soln. tank injection valve & then slowly open the down rinse valve
Adjust the down rinse valve for ensuring injection at the rate of 30-40litre/hr so
that the entire acid solution can be injected within 15–20 min.
When acid injection is completed, close first down rinse valve and then tank
injection valve.

3. Down Rinse
Fill solution tank fully with DM or cation free water & open tank injection valve.
Open the down rinse valve and rinse the bed with at least 1-1.5 tank volume
of water to remove adhered acid from resin surface.
Close first down rinse valve and then the tank injection valve.

4. Up Rinse
Open first supply water inlet valve
Open then outlet valve of cation unit and start rinse in up-flow mode by
discharging the water.
Rinse in up-flow mode for 10-20 minutes at service flow rate by adjusting
cation inlet valve.

Check the water quality at the outlet. If the water quality found satisfactory,
the unit can be taken into service by closing the up rinse valve and
transferring the line to inlet of anion unit.

Anion Exchange Regeneration

1. Preparing alkali solution

Take 600 gm NaOH (100%) flake in a separate bucket and add 10 litre DM
water for dissolve the salt to make a solution of concentration 6-7.5%. When
solution cool down transfer it to solution tank.

2. Start alkali Injection

Open first soln. tank injection valve & then slowly open the down rinse valve
Adjust the down rinse valve for ensuring injection at the rate of 20litre/hr so
that the entire caustic solution can be injected within 30–35 min.
When alkali injection is completed, close first down rinse valve and then tank
injection valve.

3. Down Rinse
Fill solution tank fully with DM water and open the tank injection valve.
Open down rinse valve and rinse the bed with at least 2-3 tank volume of
water to remove adhered caustic from resin surface.
Close first down rinse valve and then the tank injection valve.

4. Up Rinse
Open first the cation outlet valve
Open inlet valve and outlet valve of anion unit and start rinse in up-flow mode
by discharging water through outlet.
Rinse for 25-30 minutes at service flow rate by adjusting anion inlet valve.

Check time to time water quality at the outlet of anion unit.

If the water quality found satisfactory, the unit can be taken into service by
closing the outlet valve and transferring the line to the next unit
