METHOD TIME MEASUREMENT

8.1 Objectives
1. Introducing method of Method Time Measurement in time mesurment in the
application of standard time measurement by analyzing the elements of the working
movement.
2. Students able to identify the elements of movement in assembly process
3. Students able to optimize the movement in assembly process.
4. Students able to calculate the standard time by studying the elements of the
movement with the help of movie footage.
8.2 Tutorial Task
The operator was put in some beads to the thread of bracelet making with certain
pattern. Two trays was put in front of operator as far as 30 cm. Two white breads are
starting and ending string and then yellow, pink, blue, and black breads we repeat this
sequence for three times. We made two layout, first is initial layout and
recommendation layout. We recorded the activation and we analyse the working
element.

TOTAL 1383.7

8.4.3.3. Standard Time

Total TMU : 1383.7
Standard Time : 1383.7 TMU x 0.0006 minutes = 0.83022 minutes
8.4.4 Saving Time
Standard time initial method : 1.11318 minutes
Standard time recommended method : 0.83022 minutes
The calculation of percentage of savings in time is based on the formulation:
Time ∈initial layout−Time∈recomendation layout
Saving Time = x 100%
Time∈initial layout
1.11318 minutes−0.83022 minutes
= x 100%
1.11318 minutes
= 32 %
So, the saving time is 32%, means that the later process of assembly is more
efficient or faster than the previous one.
8.4.5 Standard Time Analysis
Based on the data that already taken by assembling the bracelet, with initial
and recommendation layout for the activity, it can be seen that the activity of
assembling using the recommendation layout is faster than the activity using the
initial layout. The researcher got the standard time of initial activity is 1.11318
minutes and recommendation activity is 0.75768 minutes. From this calculation,
we can conclude that the recommendation workstation is more efficient than the
initial workstation. Though the distance between the worker and the components in
initial workstation is too far, and not confident for the operator. The operator found
the difficulty to assembly the bracelet based on the initial layout because the place
of component is like not neat, with the recommended layout, the arrangement of
the component is good, with the steps that the operator must do it, it was getting
easy to assembly the bracelet. Thus, the standard time is faster in the recommended
workstation. Here is the difference between the initial and recommendation layout :

8.4.6 Saving Time Analysis

Based on the calculation of saving in time percentage, the result obtained is
32%. It means that the process of assembly is faster and more efficient if it is done
by the activity with the second layout, because it can save 32% of time. This result
is influenced by several factors. First factor is the arrangement of bracelet
components. In the initial workstation layout, the components are arranged in
jumble order, so the operator was confused and found little bit difficulty with
which component that should be assembled first, so she need more time to think, it
is quite wasting time. However, for the recommendation layout the operator
already know well the place of bracelet components. So, the operator can easily
assembly the bracelet. The operator did not waste time in choosing the component
based on the order and she can save 32% time.
8.4.7 Conclusion
From the MTM table above, we can see that the total motion in
recommended workstation is less than the total motion in initial workstation
although the difference is only 2 which are the distance of every layout and the
arrangement of each components. It also has the difference on the standard time,
the standard time of initial activity is 1.11318 minutes and the standard time of
recommendation activity is 0.75768 minutes. This means in the recommended
layout can help the operator easily to assembly the bracelet, because it is arranged
in order which make the assembling activity become effective, but in the first
layout is jumble arrangement which make the difficulty to assembly. Also, the
distance of the layout is 23 cm shorter than the initial. With the recommended
time, it also can save the time until 32%, so it is more efficient. So, to simply sum
up all this conclusion, the recommended layout of workstation has good
arrangement and more efficient for the operator to assembly the components of
bracelet than the initial one.
