Austin, Texas. Opinion Analysts conducted 604 interviews with registered voters who participated in the 2018
General Election. The sample mirrors the age, ethnic, gender, and geographic distribution of the 2018 City of
Austin General Election. The survey was conducted via telephone by live callers between February 27 and
March 6 of 2019.
Q1: Preferred Mode of Transportation: Ideally, if you had all of these options available to you, safely and
affordably, how would you prefer to get around?
7.6% Bicycle
5.6% Walking
0.8% Electric Scooter
31.1% Bus or Train
4.5% Rideshare Services
50.4% Personal Car
Position Statements: I am going to read some things that people have said about transportation issues in Austin.
For each one, please tell me whether you strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree with the
statement.
Q2: We must spend more on alternatives to cars because we can never build enough roads to
solve our traffic problems.
Q3: Having protected lanes separating bicycles and scooters from cars makes the streets safer for drivers.
Q5: The money we're spending on bike lanes, sidewalks and trails would be better spent expanding
our roads.
Q6: I am more inclined to support a business that demonstrates a commitment to a full range of
choices and options for transportation solutions beyond cars.
Q7: Electric Scooters: One solution to the problems posed by scooters is to have scooters and bicycles share
dedicated pathways protected from cars and separated from pedestrians. Would you strongly approve, approve,
disapprove or strongly disapprove of the City committing to that approach?
Q8: Infrastructure Expediting: Funding has already been approved for expanded bicycle and pedestrian
infrastructure in recent bond elections, and most projects are being readied for implementation now at a fraction
of the cost of building new roads. Would you strongly approve, approve, disapprove or strongly disapprove of
the City employing an accelerated timetable for projects like these?
Q10: Do you strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree with this statement: Cities like Dallas, Houston
and Los Angeles tried to expand roads for more and more cars as they grew, with poor results; Austin has an
opportunity to avoid that mistake by planning for more transportation options.
