1. Introduction
1.1 Function
The JRC Model JLN-550 Doppler Sonar is an equipment for measuring the bottom tracking speed and water
tracking speed, utilizing the reflection of the ultrasonic wave signal from the sea bottom or in the seawater,
which are radiated downward obliquely from the transducer with which the hull bottom is installed.
This equipment measures in two directional speed of bow and stern line direction of the ship, and right and left
direction in the bow.
The right and left direction speed of stern is calculated by using the ROT(Rate of turn gyro) signal. (Three axis
type)
The JLN-550 conforms to the IMO (International Maritime Organization) performance standards, provides
accurate displays of ship’s speed over a wide range from dead slow to maximum.

2.2 Installation Procedure
10
2.3 Dismantling and Keeping
・ Remove the packing after detaching tightening gland from NKF-770T tank part.
・ Keep the detached packing till the installation process of transducer carefully with the NKF-770S transducer
part.
・ Fix the tightening gland and washer again temporarily to the tank where the packing was removed.
11
2.4 Welding Guide
・ Weld the tank to become the same to bottom plate side.
・ Weld to become within installation angle error ±3° according to the bow mark.
・ Weld the tank horizontally.
・ Remove an umbo of 2mm or more (welding character, joint connecting, outlets, and cover of another
equipment etc.) within the range of 2m forward of the transducer.
・ Design open ahead and doubling on the bottom plate side in the shipyard according to the classification.

The material of the transducer tank used for transducer NKF-770 for Doppler Sonar uses rolled steels
SM490A (JIS G3106) for the welding structure that is JIS standard product. The ingredient of the material is
shown in the following Tables 1.
The ingredients table of the NK material "KA" is shown in the following Tables 2. "SM490" used for this
transducer tank can be used because it agrees with this without trouble.
The steel material inspection report of this material (MIL sheet) is attached.
14
2.5 Painting of Tank
Paint the green undercoat paints part in the tank. However, the packing surface and the screw hole are
excluded.
15
2.6 Mounting of the Transducer
・ Install 3-4 all screw rods of M8×500 in the cover board mounting hole.
(Arrange 3-4 all screw rods of M8×500 in the locale.)
・ Fix cover board temporarily with the M8 nut. (Arrange 3-4 M8 nuts in the locale.)
(Note the bow mark of cover board.)
16
・ Put NKF-770 transducer on the mounting plate.
・ Do not lift the main body of transducer by gripping the cable. It causes the disconnection.
Banding band
17
・ Note that there might be the disconnection when the cable is pulled with being twisted.
・ The spacer uses rubber of 10mm in thickness. And, the cover board uses the iron plate of 12mm in
thickness.
18
・ Lift transducer of each cover board, and fix temporary by hexagon head bolt M8×20 and several M8 spring
washers.
Bow mark
19
・ Formally tighten cover board with hexagon head bolt M8×20 and the M8 spring washer, and fill the resin to
the counterbored hole.
20
・ Do not fill the resin within the range of the seawater invasion in the tank interior.
You may spread the resin on the space between the cover board and the main body of the tank.
Fill the resin such as Silicone Bond, etc. to counterbored hole for the installation bolt of the cover board.
21
・ Tighten until tightening GLAND becomes 5mm from the upper surface of the tank.
・ Do not bend, and install the acute angle with the standing up part of the cable.
Do the wiring processing in the cable standing up part so as not to swing by the vibration.
Do not pull the cable strongly in the state of kink (It tangles, and twisted state).
・ Parallel Pipe Threads G1(PF1) JIS B0202 is used for the waterproof securing of the screw portion of gland.
Gland
・ Install it the place separated from the transducer of another equipment by 2m or more for the interference
prevention.
・ It is recommended to be installed with Doppler log ahead of echo sounder though it usually installs from the
bow in order with low frequency.
・ Install it to be suitable for the direction of the bow in parallel to the bow tail line of bow mark of the
transducer within about 3°.
・The tightening torques of the screws such as bolts and nuts not specially specified are based on following
Table 1.

22
・ Adjust it according to the following procedure when the radiation surface of transducer projects more than
cover board by 2mm or more.
Adjustment guide
When the height adjustment on the transducer radiation surface is necessary, this guide shows the procedure
for adjusting it by exchanging spacer.
Detaching of transducer
1. Remove the resin filled to the mounting hole of cover board.
2. Detach cover board detaching ①hexagon bolt M8X20 8 places.
3. Pull out transducer from the tank. Do not add strong power to the cable.

2.7 Painting of Cover Board
・ Paint the cover board as well as the bottom plate.
・ Do not paint the transducer radiation surface.
・ The inside of the tank and the inside of the cover board are painted. Avoid thick painting that the projection
becomes 2mm or more when the cover board is installed on the tank.
25
2.8 Piping
・ Give the piping waterproofed to a position that is higher than the sea-level in preparation for "Cable
protection and interference prevention from other cables" and "Water leak from a tightening gland part".
・ Do the vibration prevention measures and the self-weight hold measures of the cable if necessary by
packing the dry sand etc. in piping.
・ Fix the cable so as not to vibrate when installing it in the watertight compartment.
・ Do not pull the cable strongly in the state of kink (It tangles, and twisted state) when laying the cable.
・ Secure 100mm or more for the cable bend radius.
・ A cable acute angle bend in the gland exit part is strict prohibition.
・ Fix at intervals within 1m so as not to put the load on the cable or give piping to a position that is higher than
the sea level.
・ Fix the cable so as not to vibrate.
・ Separate from the cable of Echo Sounder by 0.5m or more for the interference prevention.

2.9 Final Check
Quality confirmation of transducer when installing
1) Phenomenon to generate in the equipment
The quality of the transducer was not confirmed before the trial. And, the trial was done without knowing
the thing that the transducer has been damaged.
Therefore, the case that becomes a big problem has been generated.
2) Concrete content of work
To confirm whether transducer is normal before the ship is launched, carry out the following work: [1.
Confirmation of insulation resistance and thermistor, 2. Confirmation of the resonance frequency of
transducer].

2. Detach ①hexagon bolt M8X20 3-4 places, and install all screw rod (M8X500) and fall prevention nuts (NB)
to the place. (local arrangements)
3. After ①hexagon head bolt M8X20 of the remainder is detached, lower cover board slowly below while
loosening the fall prevention nut manually.
4. When you pull out the transducer from the tank, do not add strong power to the cable.

4.2 Installation Guide
・ Do not install in the place where the vibration such as deck crane and anchor drive equipment
neighborhood is strong. The allowable vibration level is shown below.
The vibration measurement point is the upper surface of the signal processor unit.
・ Execute the earth construction by using the copper plate provided by not the earth lead but the attachment.
In addition, earth it to the stud bolt etc. welded directly to the hull after peeling off painting enough.
・ The unit install in the distance that the transducer cable reaches.
Because the IP grade is IPX5, this unit is usually installed in boatswain’s store.
・ As the transducer cable may receive or generate noise, install the unit in a place that is free of
interference. Usually, it covers the cable with the piping of the exclusive use from the transducer to the
signal processor.
・ Install it vertically on the wall so that the cable inlet becomes it below.
