THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents introduction, background of the study, theoretical

framework, conceptual framework, statement of the problem, hypothesis, scope and

limitation of the study, significance of the study and definition of terms.

Introduction

Facebook is a social networking service, launched in February 2004, and is

operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. As of now, Facebook has more than

800 million active users. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college

roommates and fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris

Hughes. The Web site's membership was initially limited to Harvard students, but

gradually, it was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League,

and eventually all US universities. As of September 2006, the network was extended

beyond educational institutions to anyone with a registered email address. User must

register before using the site and users can create a personal profile, add other users as

friends, upload pictures and exchange messages, after registering. Facebook allows any

users who are 13 and above and the site is free. More than 70 languages are available on

Facebook. At January 2009, a study ranked Facebook as the most used social networking

service by worldwide monthly active users. Facebook is the largest social-networking site

with an educational focus. Facebook's current revenue is about 4.27 US billion dollars

and the company is worth between $75 billion to $100 billion. The official stated
purpose of Facebook is to make the world more open and connected. Facebook’s

latest mission statement is that people use Facebook to stay connected with friends and

family, discover what’s going on in the world and share and express what matters to

them.GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a number that indicates how well or how high you

scored in your courses on average. It’s meant to score you during your studies, and shows

whether your grades have been high or low overall in your classes. This number is then

used to assess whether you meet the standards and expectations set by the degree

programme or university. Facebook is dominate potential –places among youth specially

students. Most of students are spending more time in using Facebook which is lead to

impact time spending in education. This research is going to study about the impact of

Facebook on student academic performance.

Background of the Study

The ultimate purpose of this study is going to examine the use of Facebook and its

impact on students’ academic performance. The core research question of this survey is:

what is the effect of Facebook, having on students’ academic performance? In other

words does time spending every day on Facebook have a significant impact on academic

performance? In addition to that this survey going to test do Sex, age and status of the

student impact on academic performance on them? Nowadays most of peoples use

Facebook to make social network among people all over the world. And students also

spending most of their time on such social media called Facebook. Facebook.com the

most popular and commonly used online social network Web site, has created passion
among high school students in modern years. High School students are become very

interest in online social networking. Online social network sites such as Facebook work

as an important entertainment for undergraduates. Facebook, the most popular social

network site, was specifically designed for undergraduates and is the most commonly

used. Therefore, time spent on Facebook may affect academic performance. For example,

time spent on Facebook may directly affect and/or reasonable the students’ academic

performance. This is what we have chosen to make students aware of Facebook. This

affects our academic performance because of the overuse or focus on Facebook the more

the chance to become lazy and if we become lazy. Our academic performance may have

dropped due to addiction to Facebook.

Theoretical Framework

This research will be based with the different theories or other researchers done

by several theorists about the effects of Facebook. This research will also stress on effects

done by Facebook in the academic performance of the 3rd year Education Students of

Tagaytay City National High School. They use Facebook to initiate and maintain

friendships and to seek out new information about those in their social circle (Ellison et

al., 2011). They use Facebook to have new friends coming from different places where

you are away from each other with the same communication that is happening to you.

Facebook is a social media trend there are so many people want to know how to use it.

For people Facebook is an interesting thing they need to know and learn but do not know

that it has an effect on themselves. The practice of social information seeking is related to
students perceived levels of social capital (the resources obtained from their relationships

and interactions such as emotional support (Ellison et al., 2011). It is connected to

students because students often use Facebook. Young people today are becoming more

interested in Facebook where their use is over. Facebook makes it possible for friends to

have friends but Facebook also makes it possible for someone to get sick because of

being Facebook or addicted to Facebook it causes bad.

The students would still want to have maintenance of connections with their old as well

as the new set of friendships. They want to stay connected and get updated with the latest

news and updates of their friends. They want to get a hand on online games that most

male students would engage in and prolonging the use of Facebook. This research is

considered in the effect of Facebook to the academic performance of the 3rd year

Education Student of Tagaytay City National High School in the School Year 2018-2019.

The research determined the academic performance in relation to the effects in using

Facebook.

made by organisms, systems, or artificial entities in conjunction with their environment,

which includes the other systems or organisms around as well as the physical

environment.

Facebook- The term used in this study refers to be a popular free social networking

website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send

messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues.

Social Media Network- The term used in this study refers to be a interactive computer-

mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career

interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety

of stand-alone and built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges

of definition; however, there are some common features.

Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the gathered researches from different sources. These

studies will be used as a guide and support to our research. Our related literature starts

with the information about Facebook and social networking, as well as the possible

effects that might affect students when Facebook and social networking is being used

extensively.

Foreign Literature

Ul Haq & Chand (2012) investigated the usage and popularity of famoussocial

media network (Facebook) among university students with special focus on thegender ba

sed comparison and the impact of the selected social medium on their

academic performance. The two researchers evaluate the pattern and frequency of

Facebook use among university students while focusing gender that majority of theusers

(61%) agree that this social medium has adverse effects on their academic performance.

Further analysis reveals that among these 61%, majority of therespondents were male. In

addition to adverse effects of Facebook on academic performance, there was also an

opinion that us of Facebook makes it hard for them to perform the best on their career per

formance. However the researcher feels that thelater opinion is not very clear and establis

hed and needs further investigation. These research analysis s hows that using social

media especially in terms ofusing Facebook is equally popular among male and female

student of the universityunder study. The researchers evaluate that majority of the users

agree that these social

medium has adverse effects on their academic performance. These study related in our

study in the way of investigating about the effects of social media on theiracademic achie

vements among students. They are both undertaking through analyzing a random sample

of respondents.

Hamat, Embi, & Hassan (2012) studied the use of social networking platformsamong und

ergraduate and postgraduate students of Malaysian institutes of highereducation. This qua

litative research collected data on 6358 student respondents

through a selfadministered questionnaire and analyzed this data to make observationson t

he use of social networking sites among them. The study also collects opinion ofstudents

about the impacts of social medium on their academic performance. One of the very

significant findings of the study is about the use of socialnetworking sites for the purpose

of learning. Majority of the respondents agree thatthey use SNSs as informal learning tool

and that it helps them connect to their friendsand peers to get help regarding their studies

. However, in case of interaction withteachers, an equal split of opposite opinions exist.

This study also supports the most common finding of majority of wellstructured studies

that use of social networking sites has no significantly negativeimpact on

the students’ academic performance. They further state that the possibility

of some other factors like social media addiction, more time on internet, chatting,

cognitive absorption etc. linked with the use of internet or specifically socialnetworking

sites may cause poor academic performance. The above literature review shows that other

students are using social mediafor their learning, they use it as a learning tool. It has a

significant on our study because the use of social media can affect the academic
performance in a positive andnegative way. Social media addiction is the top negative eff

ect that may cause pooracademic performance. Negussie & Ketema (2014) further invest

igated if there is any impact of usingFacebook while accessing through different devices.

Among a variety of devices, itwas found that the correlation between using Facebook on

mobile devices andstudents grades is highly negative as compared to using Facebook on

other devices. This adverse effect is explained by the fact that using cellphones for socialn

etworking activities may involve multitasking and all students are not equally

efficient in multitasking skills. The study suggests, that students must be encouragedto us

e social networking sites for educational purposes instead of blocking these platforms in t

he educational premises. These study has a correlation in our study because they both pro

ving that usingsocial media has a big impact in the academic achievement among student.

According to Aliyas, Hope and Justin (2012) that ‘academic performance is a function of

attention span, time management skills, student characteristics, academic competence,

time spent on online social network and academic competence is defined as a student’s

ability to manage the required course load and course materials for his/her

chosen field of study’ (p.2118).Facebook is holding the largest percentage of

member in online social network today and most of them are students around the globe.

Use of the Facebook might have good or bad impacts on their

academic performance and academic lives. The excessive use of Facebook

among the students is generating main question that is Facebook use effecting

on students’ academic performance and playing positive or negative role in their

social and academic lives? This study will explore the impact of Facebook on
students’ academic performance with the glance of social capital. What is the

contribution of Facebook to generating or vanishing students’ social capital

during their academic and social lives? If you use internet you are increasingly

likely to use Facebook, it is the platform of the people to get more out of it and

new form of communication (Kirkpatrick 2010,

16).Facebook being social networking sites provides an online platform on which student

s create profiles, promote and share information and contents and have interactions with c

ontacts both known and unknown (Kirkpatrick, 2010). Facebook have expanded recently,

whichhave led to its use by people of all generations extentsively. Several types of resear

chexamine this online platform attraction and its persuasive character and the reason that

cause people of every kind and different ages to this communicate. Other studies show th

atfacebook extention presence can have effects that are harmful to academic performance

.If students spend most of their for time on facebook, their academic

performance will reduceand thus their grades (Kirkpatrick, 2010). A day sudents should s

pend at least 30-35 minutes

surfing facebook. They actually surf for only three to four minutes on each visit to beupd

ated, but they severally visit facebook a day. Others spend eight on the website. Although

students consider facebook is distracting and consuming a lot of time, they note that they

can’tstop visiting the website because they prefer it and use it to contact family

members andfriends, whether or not encounter them each day, Tess (2013) argues that th

ere is a variety ofcorrelations that exists in the literature. Other studies though find a signi

ficant negative correlation between a student’s performance and use of facebook

while others fine no correlations or weak correlations.

Only a few studies come up with positive correlationsthough not with highlevel significa

nce. Interestingly, the negative correlations for thefacebook usage and poor academic per

formance have been associated with personality traits

Local Literature

This chapter presents a review studies that related to the study about the effects of

facebook. This research focused to analyzing the effect of facebook on students

performance.According to comprehensive literature review by Ellison (2007), the role of

facebook in higher education is attributed to the creation of virtual classes. The review has

analysed massive research database around the world to make this review comprehensive

in its coverage for almost all aspects of an endeavor to give an explanation for the diverse

roles of facebook in higher education classes.

Social networking sites let individuals to present themselves, and begin or keep

connections with others. The extremely popular social network site for students

indifferent levels, Facebook, has already printed a big impact on their lives. The site can

beused towards work-related contexts, romantic relationship commencement

andconnecting those with shared interests. Members may use the site to mingle with

peoplethey already know offline or to find new friends. Facebook permits its users to

presentthemselves in an Internet profile, build up "friends" who can post comments on

eachother's walls, and view each other's page.Facebook associates can also join groups

based on common interests, see whatthings they have in common, and learn each others'

hobbies, interests, favorite music, andromantic relationship status through their pages. But
what are behind these facts? What does Facebook bring to the lives of themembers

especially to the students? How does Facebook affect the life of a student?According to

studies, Facebook has an impact to students. Some students areusing it for educational

purposes. Students would like to do some online collaborationwith classmates. It is said

that using Facebook boosts students’ self-esteem even more. They would feel

belongingness in the community compared to those who do not haveaccounts. It also

provides news on what are happening in the real world and even in their school campuses.

On the other hand, negative effects flourish. It was found that socialnetworking sites has formed a

new kind of addiction which we called the "social mediaaddiction" and it is quite true in using

Facebook. Are you addicted to Facebook? Somewould say "yes" and some would say "no". It

depends on the level of cravings. But in therecent study, it was found that a lot of students are by

now addicted to it, to the extentthat their school performance is affected.

The causes of cyberbullying according to Calvete, Orue, Estevez, Villardon and

Padilla (2010), was significantly related with the use of proactive aggression, justification

of violence, exposure to violence and less perceived social support of friends. Privacy

concerns: this is another concern that everyone involved in social networking is faced

with. The rate at which people post or share fake information calls for alarm and it is

difficult to ascertain that, what people say and post are truly who they are. Individuals’

private information are publicly displayed on some of these social networks and

malicious people take advantage and perpetrate all kinds of harassment. It is also argued

that the privacy options offered by most social networking sites (SNSs) do not provide
users with the flexibility needed to handle conflicts with individuals who have different

conceptions of privacy.

Synthesis of the Study

The mentioned studies, theories or related literature of the study gives more basis

or focus on the student’s use of Facebook. They sometimes tend to apply the assistance of

Facebook to their school works, academics and behaviour. They also tend to social

capitalization. This research will serve a juncture of reflection for the use of Facebook

that could probably have positive and negative effects on the academic performance. The

gathered researches had led us to formulate several ideas and assumptions to the different

effects done by using Facebook.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This study identified the effects of Facebook in the academic performance

of the students of Grade 9 May Kasiyahan at Tagaytay City National High School.

In this chapter, the research methodology is defined. The area where the

study was conducted, the sampling techniques, the population and sample are also

describe. The instrument used to collect the data incuding the data gathering procedures

and statiscal treatment of data is likewise presented.

RESEARCH DESIGN

A descriptive correlation between research methodology was used for this

study. Descriptive Correlational research is looking for variables that seem to interact

with each other so that when one is seen changing, there is an idea of how the other will

change too. A correlation simply defined as a relationship between two variables. The

whole purpose of using correlations in research is to figure out which variables are

connected. This often entails the researcher to use the variables that they cannot control.

Descriptive research provides a detailed account of a social setting, a group of people a

community, a situation, or some other phenomena.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The respondents of the study are the students of Grade 9 May Kasiyahan in

Tagaytay City National High School. The said school is located at Mendez Crossing East,
Mayor’s Drive Tagaytay City were the researchers have become familiar their field

study.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers used a self-made questionnaire and use the Likert Scale from

the same study that was validated by adding an Instructor and a Professor.

Part I of the questionnaire is the Demographic profile, such as name and

gender. Also the general average of the students are included.

Part II of the questionnaire is the level of awareness of the students of Grade 9

May Kasiyahan about the effects of Facebook in academic performance. The

respondents answered the questionnaire by choosing between yes or no.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONDENTS

The respondents of the study are the 44 students of Grade 9 May Kasiyahan in

Tagaytay City National High School. They were requested to answer the questionnaires

in order to know the effects Facebook in academic performance.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researcher ask for the permission of the teacher of Tagaytay City

National High School. A letter of endorsement with the questionnaire were presented to

the teacher then to the students to conduct the said study. The questionnaires were
distributed to the students of Grade 9 May Kasiyahan in Tagaytay City National High

School. The answers of the respondents were tailed and presented in the Pie graph and

were given a statistical treatment base on our statician.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The data was compiled, sorted, classified, coded, tabulated and analyzed using a

computer data analysis package known as Statistical Package for Social Science 20.0

(SPSS 20.0). The following statistical treatment is used by the researchers to answer time

specific problems and to test the hypothesis of the study.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

This study described the effects of Facebook in the students academic

performance by conducting a survey where in the survey questionnaire were distributed

to the Grade 9 May kasiyahan of Tagaytay City National High School. As viewed in the

survey conducted, there was no significant impact on the academic performances of

students.

Conclusion

Based on the result of the survey, here are the conclusions:

• Usage of facebook is overwhelming; we get in touch with our loved ones, relatives, and

friends. We get to know the latest news and issues; we can participate in an online

discussion and many more.

• Facebook is also an efficient social capitalization tool. It let every single individual to

present them, and begin or keep connections with others. Facebook associates can also

join groups based on common interest, see what things they have in common, and learn

each others hobbies, interests, favourite music and romantic relationship status through

their pages.

• Few of the side effects of Facebook adversely affect on a students behavior and

performance, one of the biggest effect is too much time on the internet.
Another dramatic change seen in students bahavior is that they will not spent the required

time on studies as they asked to, brag about the position and level that they are on the

games onlines, how many friends are there as their partners, scores, records etc.

• Facebook also has a large impact to students. Some students are using it for educational

purposes. Students would like to do some online collaboration with their classmates. It

also provides news on what are happening in the real world and even in their school.

• Facebook-using students even perform task (projects or assignments) without

completion for the reason that they spend more time scrolling down on their newsfeed to

see updates about their friends and look up for their notifications rather than finishing

their school tasks. Aside that Facebook affects students academic performance; it also has

an effect on students emotional health.

• Some would utilize the site to express what they feel towards their enemy in school or

even in outside the campus. They would blurt out through posting status that would target

their opponent just to hurt their feelings often which has nothing to do with school and

didn’t affect academic performances.

• Despite of all the reaserched positive and negatives effects shown, the respondents that

we have surveyed were not so negatively affected in anyway even if it is grouped

according to age or gender. They both have equal positive outcomes to their academic

performances in school. Even if in just more observation of the following students

surveyed in class sessions, they tend to participate in class rather than spending time on

their phone using Facebook. Thus, they still maintained an average GPA for the

institution they enrolled in.

Recommendation

Based on the result and conclusion of this study, the following are recommend:

• It is recommended that parents and teachers will always probe in keep track of the

students academic performaces.

• Parents and teachers should understand on how to utilize the social media networks

engaged by the students to be able to keep track of their activities.

• The students should minimize their excessive use of Facebook on more unproductive

matters such as boosting their social statuses through boastful and unnecessary post.

• Educational institutions and its staff members should acknowledge the use of Facebook

as the modern channel for the ever changing globalized telecommunications network and

likewise be able to use Facebok as a new tool for educational development and other

productive marketable uses.
