Installation of Thermobreak Sheet for outdoor applications requires additional instructions. These
instructions must be read along with the General Installation Instructions Section in this document.
For external ductwork lagging in outdoor applications, cladding over Thermobreak is recommended.
These installation instructions are one of a series that cover various Thermobreak applications:
Insulation of general pipework: Thermobreak Tube and Sheet for Pipework.
Insulation of ductwork: Thermobreak Sheet for Ductwork.
Insulation of AHUs: Thermobreak Sheet for Air Handling Units (AHUs).
Insulation of fittings: Thermobreak Sheet and Tube – Fitting Fabrication.
Insulation of vessels: Thermobreak Sheet for Vessel Insulation and Cladding.
Insulation of under-slab: Thermobreak Sheet for Under-Slab.
Insulation of raised floors: Thermobreak Sheet for Raised Floors.
Insulation of pipework used in solar applications: Thermobreak Solar.
Sound absorbing insulation for duct liners: Thermobreak Acoustic.
Pre-insulated pipework: Thermobreak Thermacoil for Refrigeration Piping.
Pipe supports: Thermobreak Thermaloc.
Fire-stopping of wall/floor penetrations: Thermobreak Fi-Block.
These installation instructions can be extended to cover other applications for Thermobreak Sheet not
covered by the above documents. However extra care and effort needs to be taken by the user to
ensure the chosen Thermobreak Sheet product is fit for purpose.
Thermobreak products are very easy to install. However, since they are based on closed cell foam, they
require different techniques to those experienced in fibrous and beaded insulations. It is important to
note the following:
1. Review the Engineer’s specifications in conjunction with this document.
2. Read the installation instructions pertinent to the type of system to which Thermobreak will be
installed. This may include other Thermobreak installation instructions as listed above.
3. Should there be any doubt on how to install Thermobreak it is advisable to contact Sekisui Foam
International and speak to a sales representative who will advise as to the best method of
installation.
Safety Equipment
Thermobreak is dust and fibre free and will not cause itchiness when used. Gloves and dust masks are
not required when using Thermobreak, however one should consult the OH&S requirements specified on
site.
Exposure to Heat
Closed cell foams will expand when heated. The expansion is small and predictable for service
temperatures up to 100°C but needs to be taken into account. The thicker the foam used, the more one
must accommodate for any expansion of the foam.
Type of Adhesive
Thermobreak can be supplied with different pressure sensitive adhesives to suit the application and the
installer. The adhesives can be classified as two main types:
• Low initial tack adhesives- These allow for repositioning when installing in difficult situations.
Types of Surfaces
• The type of surface to which the adhesive of the Thermobreak will be applied is important
when determining the choice of the adhesive that should be used. It is essential that the
surface is clean and free of dust, oils or surface film prior to installing the adhesive backed
Thermobreak. For painted surfaces, always conduct trials first to check adhesive suitability.
Tables 1 – 2 below provide a guide as to which Thermobreak Sheet product is most appropriate for a
particular application.
• Select Table 1 if the applications are the following:
o External lagging/indoor location.
o Internal lining/indoor location.
o External lagging/outdoor location.
• Select Table 2 if the application is the following:
o Internal lining/outdoor location.

Note 1: Mechanical fastening is recommended as the primary fixing method. Recommendations on adhesives are based on their
being a secondary fixing method to mechanical fastening.
Hangers
Conventional hangers are suitable for the installation of Thermobreak. If the duct is insulated before it is
installed, the hanger base must be lined to protect Thermobreak against compression (Figure 2). A strip
of Thermobreak cut to size would be suitable.
Taping Instructions
• Use 50 mm or greater width of recommended or specified aluminium foil tape.
• It is important that the insulation surface to which tape is to be adhered is free from dust and
dirt. If uncertain, clean the surface with a clean rag. In the case of any oil or silicone
contamination, wipe the surface with a clean rag and suitable cleaning agent, then wait to dry
before applying tape.
• Aluminium foil tapes must be applied using pressure. The more pressure applied, the more
surface contact is achieved and the better the result.
• The best way to apply this pressure is to rub the tape external surface with a flat blunt object.
• The vapour barrier should be continuous wherever there is a break in the Thermobreak foil
facing; i.e. no foam surfaces must be exposed after installation.
• When applying tape, follow the contours of the material. Do not try to flatten the contours out
with the tape. Let the tape relax into and conform to the irregularities of the surface, then rub
down (refer to Figures 3 and 4) to eliminate air bubbles.

Note 1: External mechanical fixing is not recommended in humid climates. Refer to the instructions ‘Cut Section System with
Mechanical Fixing’.

Joints
In case of the need to have joints on the insulation:
• Joints should be butted firmly together. The factory cut straight edge allows perfect mating
between two sections.
• Ensure no gaps are visible. In case of gaps, trim the edge again in a straight line to ensure
proper alignment of butt joints.
• In cases where the edges do not align perfectly, a 50 mm width strip of Thermobreak can also
be used to cover any visible gaps.
• Seal all joints with aluminium foil tape as per Taping Instructions.

• Ensure the exposed pin head/cup is sealed with aluminium foil tape to maintain the
vapour barrier.
The maximum recommended design air velocity through a duct lined with Thermobreak insulation is
12 m/s. Higher air velocities can result in excessive friction losses. There is also the risk of tape or
insulation delaminating from the duct surface.
It is advisable to use the Cut Section system, as detailed above, to line the duct. A ‘wrap-around’ type
system as used to lag the exterior duct surface is not recommended due to the difficulty of pushing the
insulation into the corners. Ensure width of sheets is adequate to cover the duct less the thickness of the
adjacent sheets of insulation. (Refer to Figure 11).
In general, the fixing methods described in the External Lagging Installation Instructions can also be
followed for internal lining.
If the internal surface is irregular, use more cut sections and/or more frequent pinning as required.
Where there is any risk that excessive heating of the duct outer metal casing could occur, follow the
installation instructions below (Ductwork Outside a Building).
As such, the following instructions (additional to Ductwork Inside a Building) must be observed:
• It is recommended that all insulation installations are mechanically fixed in place.
• Either factory applied adhesive (high tack) or wet adhesive can also be used to improve the
bond between Thermobreak and the metal surface.
• Whenever practical in warmer climates, insulate the exterior surface with Thermobreak Sheet
to prevent excessive heating of the metal casing.
Sekisui Foam International recommends that cladding is used over Thermobreak whenever it is installed
outdoors. Although the Thermobreak reinforced aluminium foil facing can withstand many years of UV
exposure, it can be compromised through the effects of salt water, chemicals or mechanical damage. For
further information, refer to the Technical Information Bulletin Expected Service Life of Thermobreak.
In general, the External Lagging Installation Instructions can be followed for outdoor installations (prior
to cladding). If cladding is not used, the following additional instructions must be observed:
• Prior to installation, store Thermobreak indoors in its packaging.
• Remove Thermobreak from its packaging just before cutting/installation to ensure all surfaces
remain clean and free from dust/moisture.
• It is especially important that the metal surface is clean and dry, and at ambient temperature.
• Avoid installing the insulation during times of the day when the metal surface may be very hot,
when it is raining or when condensation has occurred.
• Use outdoor recommended aluminium foil tape of width 75mm or greater. Take extra care to
fully seal the tape onto Thermobreak and eliminate air bubbles.
• Tape overlaps should end along the sides or underneath the duct.
• Avoid walking on the insulated duct.
