software company that provides
server, application and desktop
virtualization, networking,
software as a service, and cloud
computing technologies
VIRTUAL DESKTOP INFRASTRUCTURE (VDI)

Often referred to as client desktop virtualization, this is a type of machine virtualization

technology that separates the operating system from the physical hardware and enables a single
laptop or desktop to run virtual machines side by side.

Remote Desktop Service (RDS)

Remote Desktop Service (RDS), a

proprietary protocol of Microsoft,
allows users to connect remotely
to a network with a graphic user
interface. While the RDS client is
installed on the user system, the
RDS server software is installed on
the server, and a remote
connection is established with one
or more terminal servers. While users in the RDS network connect to the server using a VM, this
VM is shared with other users and operates on the same server OS for all users.

There are a few VDI pros:

They are secured by default (firewall, antyvirus, backup)

They are ready whenever and wherever user needs them (if there is computer network access)

They can be accessed from any physical device: computer, laptop, smartphone (though user’s
experience maybe different using each of them).

Applications can be ready for the users immadietaly as they are needed without long time
installations

There are cons as well:

The performance of graphics extensive applications may not be the same as on physical
workstation

If the is no computer network access there is no access to users’ virtual desktops

Building VDI can be complicated as well as expensive

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is a virtualization technology that allows entrepreneurs to

host a desktop operating system and access all applications on centrally-hosted virtual machines.
It is based on the client-server computing model, which sometimes known as Server-Based
Computing (SBC). VDI has completely transformed the current landscape of businesses. Simply
put, using VDI, users can access all the data running either on hosted servers or cloud. Not to
mention, it is bringing significant benefits to companies seeking to become agiler as well as
reducing company costs and complexity. This technology offers an array of benefits to the
businesses, which include:

Reduces company costs and complexity;

Improves performance and adaptability of the most recent cloud technologies;

Increases productivity and server uptime;

Allows users to access data and apps from anywhere;

Delivers better user experience;

Serves as a secure alternative for businesses; and

Increases the life of the hardware.

Aside from these advantages, VDI is easy to manage and can deploy the countless virtual systems.

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) offers critical benefits to IT, including improved security and
centralized desktop management, but the ability to securely access a remote Windows or Linux
desktop isn’t enough in today’s organizations. The demands placed on IT require a more evolved
approach. Organizations need to optimize user experiences to increase adoption, maximize
capabilities by minimizing the number of consoles to manage, and ensure sensitive data stays
safe — even in BYOD programs where employees access apps and data from personal devices.
