(1) Service brake control pedal

(2) Accelerator control

4. Fully depress service brake control pedal (1) . Depress service brake control pedal (1) for the
entire test.

5. Shift the transmission to the THIRD SPEED FORWARD position.

NOTICE

Do not keep the torque converter in a stall condition for long periods of
time. Damage could occur in the torque converter, the engine, and the
brakes.

NOTICE

Do not stall the torque converter for more than 15 seconds during this
test.

6. Fully depress accelerator control (2) . The engine speed will increase and then start to level off.
Once engine starts to level, hold throttle for an additional five seconds. Engine RPM will
continue to increase. At the end of five seconds note the engine speed. Using the messenger to
view engine speed will provide a more accurate readout. This is the stall speed. Immediately
release the accelerator after stalling.

7. Immediately shift the transmission to the NEUTRAL position. Run the engine at 1500 RPM for
at least two minutes in order to cool the transmission oil. Do not repeat the test until the oil is
cooled properly. Do not shut down the engine until the oil is cooled properly.

8. The correct stall speed is 1869 ± 50 RPM from sea level to 5,000 feet. Stall speed will decrease
at higher altitudes. If testing cannot be completed at a lower altitude, contact the DSN for
corrected stall speed. If the stall speed that is obtained in Step 6 is incorrect, refer to Testing and
Adjusting, "Operational Checks".

9. Shut down the engine after the transmission oil is cooled properly.
