ABSTRACT

This research study presented the concepts of smoking addiction among the

Youth of NTRA, Taugtog, Botolan, Zambales. The study also determined the

intervention to such social problem. It covered one hundred fifty (150) Youth

respondents who are classified as smokers for this Calendar year 2016. Descriptive

research design was utilized by the researchers, survey checklist was the main tool of

data collection and descriptive statistics was applied in the computation, analysis and

interpretation of data.

The respondents are male students and whose age is 22 years old and

allocated a budget of 27.73 pesos for smoking.

The respondents are classified to be habitual smokers. They smoke mainly

because their friends smoke. The respondents mostly preferred Fortune White and

Marlboro as brands of cigarette. The youth respondents consumed 6 cigarettes a

week.

The respondents agreed on the Worst thing about smoking cigarettes, on the

reason why people get addicted to smoking, and the respondents also agreed on the

worst thing about being addicted to smoking.

Findings revealed that there is no significant difference on the perceptions of

the respondents on the worst thing about smoking cigarettes when grouped according

to age, sex, and social status but there is highly significant difference on the

perception as to allocation of budget for smoking per day.

There is no significant difference on the perceptions of the youth respondents

on the reason why people get addicted to smoking when grouped according to sex
and allocation of budget for smoking per day but there is a significant difference on

the perceptions as to age and social status.

A no significant difference on the perception of the respondents on the worst

thing about being addicted to smoking when grouped according to sex, allocation of

budget for smoking per day, and social status and a no significant difference on the

perception as to age were found.

Based on the findings, the researchers recommend the extensive

implementation of Republic Act 9211 by the Barangay officials be done particularly

on the aspect of merchandising of the product which is one hundred meters from any

point of the perimeter of the school, strictly implementation of DepEd order no. 73

which ordered school heads to put up no smoking signs in conspicuous places around

the school compound and place signs with the message You are entering a No-

smoking area in entry points such as gates and side entrances, to conduct forum or

symposium about the harmful effects of smoking and educate the youth including the

community with the collaboration of the school teachers, PTA officers, Barangay

officials, and barangay health workers in a serious campaign to eradicate the habit of

smoking, to build a rehabilitation centers in the community and school that will give

guidance and counseling to those youth who are already exposed and addicted to

smoking, to provide a continual advocacy on the effects of smoking and awareness

of the implementing law through the use of technology and social media where the

most youth could easily access, and to conduct further studies on finding solutions

on how to motivate the youth to change the habit of smoking.
