To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:

The petition of the undersigned, residents of the province of British Columbia, states that:

We do not accept that British Columbians should be subjected to second-hand and third-hand smoke exposure against
their will, and to the detriment of their health, within their homes – be they owned, rented, subsidized or otherwise.
Current laws fall short in recognizing smoke exposure as the serious health hazard it is, causing loss of life or serious
illness, loss of wellness as well as loss of quality of life. Additionally, mechanisms in place to address smoke exposure
under nuisance or enjoyment of property clauses are inadequate in providing realistic or timely intervention required to
address individuals’ needs.

Your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House amend the Residential Tenancy Act and Strata Property
Act to make all multi-unit dwellings in British Columbia smoke-free as a default status.

Amendment to the Acts as outlined will improve the health and well-being of all British Columbians living in multi-unit
dwellings, and will appropriately acknowledge smoke exposure as the health hazard it has definitively been proven to
be. It will further enable more prompt attention to, and resolution of, smoke exposure complaints as compared with the
present lengthy and arduous process of needing to individually and redundantly establish smoke exposure as a
substantial and unreasonable interference and hazard.

Dated 13 day of October, 2018.
