How to Make Disciples

I. Today we’re going to equip you to make disciples out of students


A. Disciples aren’t born; they’re made
B. Behind every superstar, there is someone who played a pivotal role in their
success
1. Michael Jordan was coached by Phil Jackson
2. Tom Brady was coached by Bill Belichick
3. Joshua gets the credit for taking Israel into the promised land
a) But look at who his mentor was: Moses
4. Every success story can be traced back to the people they had in their
lives
C. Today, we need to the same for our students
D. Our goal as youth leaders is to have every single student discipled

II. Why should we do this?


A. The great commission wasn’t assigned by church -- It was assigned by
God
1. You’re not here to serve me, you’re here to serve God

B. Matthew 28:18-20 NIV


1. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority
in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to
obey everything I have commanded you. And surely
I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

C. Making Disciples is God’s top priority


1. I love the story from our devotional last week
a) Jesus coming back from earth and to heaven
b) Angel asking Jesus so what is your plan for humanity to get
saved? How did you decide on doing it?
c) Jesus responding: Well I’ve got 12 people that I’ve discipled
closely
(1) They’re going to disciple other people who are then going
to disciple more people
d) The angel said, okay well do you have a back up plan?
e) Jesus says no
f) And the angel says Lord what if they fail
(1) And Jesus says, I’ve put my confidence in them
g) And the angel asks, Lord what about a plan B?
(1) And Jesus replies, there is no Plan B
2. My friends, there is no Plan B
a) God has no back up plan
b) You and I are it!
c) We are plan A

D. Ladies and gentlemen, our job is to make disciples

III. Why do you disciple?


A. Why do you care about discipling students?

IV. One of the biggest needs we have is for students to be discipled


A. Illustration: **Show list of students who aren’t discipled
B. Here are all the students who have nobody reaching out to them
1. They don’t know they’re loved
2. They don’t know how to live their life
3. They don’t know how to overcome obstacles
C. I had a student who was hospitalized for attempted suicide
1. She’s been at Amplified
2. But we never reached out to her
3. I couldn’t help but think if i only equipped the teams better, this could
have been different

D. We need to a better job


1. We need to do what God’s called us to do: Make Disciples

V. How do I Disciple students?


A. Discipling happens in many forms
1. But today I want to approach discipleship through relationship
2. I want you to lead like Jesus
3. Be involved in their lives
B. 2nd level relationship
1. Know their fears, hangups, bigger needs
C. #1: Check for any new students on Bethel Community
D. #2: Make weekly Phone calls to your students
E. #3: Read the Bible with them each day

VI. Closing
A. Every single student needs to be discipled
B. You and I are all that God has
C. He trusted us with this commission to make disciples
D. There is no plan B
E. We are Plan A
