3rd party Access Control System

integration with KONE DCS

Communication example

28th Nov 2011 Confidential | © KONE Corporation

ELI
• KONE has TCP-IP based protocol
which specifies software interface
between KONE elevator system
and ACS (Access Control
Systems)
How the KONE Elevator locking
interface (ELI) works?

• This solution to be used when customer wants the KONE DCS

elevator system to be an integrated part of
the building’s 3rd party access control system.
• Elevator locking interface is message based software interface
• ACS vendor have to develop the software module once
• Communication is based client-server architecture, KONE
group controller / Kone Interface Controller is the server who is
listening. ACS is the client who opens connection.
• The number of open connections is unlimited
• See the technical details from document 829394 (Group
controller access control interface specification)

Access closed ... message
Technical LAN
1. ACS open connection to both KGC’s. KGCs start to listen used TCP port.
2. ACS starts to send heart beat (interval typically 6 seconds).
3. ACS send the global default mask message (default lockings) to both KGC’s.
4. When user swipes an access card to card reader , user is identified
according ID and the allowed floors are checked from database.
5. ACS sends message ”Open access for COP” or ”Open access for DOP”.
6. The call can be giving from COP or DOP
7. KGC send message ”Access closed for COP” or ”Access closed for DOP” .

Site configuration
To set correct site configuration of
access control system, KONE
delivers documentation which
describes elevator system of the site,
number of floors and needed
communication parameters (e.g.
Terminal ID, elevator group ID, IP
address of group controllers etc.)
The customer defines the locked
floors as well as if the destination
locking or source and destination
locking is required.
Terminal ID, Floor ID
• Terminal ID and Floor ID are used to Terminal ID

• Floor marking is what user can see,

The integration work flow
1. SW Development
If the ACS vendor is doing the integration first time with KONE, they have to develop Elevator Locking Interface
interface sw module into Access Control System.
KONE gives software specification documents and software testing tools.

2. Simulator Test
After the Access Control vendor has developed ELI software module(s) into Access Control System, they can test it first
in their lab with KONE Access Control Protocol Tester (this simulates KONE elevator system).
In this phase can be seen e.g. if the heart beat is working between Access Control System and simulator software and
the ELI software module is communicating with the simulator software.

3. Factory Acceptance test (FAT)

The communication between ACS and KONE elevator system can be tested over the internet to KONE R&D lab. Test
follows Factory Acceptance Test plan (document 984640) which describes the test cases.

4. Site installation and test

After successful FAT, the Access Control System vendor is ready to install system to the site where it is configured to
communicate with KONE elevator system. KONE configures elevators system to communicate with Access Control
system.

Note ! When the ELI interface has been developed once, it can be used in the next projects as well.
