Problem #1: The Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
The results of a Standard Penetration Test are given in the table below. Using these test data,
a) Determine the SPT‐N (Nfield or N30) values.
b) Using the proper correction factors, calculate the corrected SPT number, (N1)60 for each test
data point.
Depth SPT Soil
(m) 0‐15 cm 15‐30 cm 30‐45 cm SPT‐N Type
1.5 4 3 3 Coarse Sand
3.0 3 5 4 Coarse Sand
4.5 4 4 6 Coarse Sand
6.0 4 3 5 Coarse Sand
7.5 2 3 4 Coarse Sand
9.0 3 3 6 Coarse Sand
10.5 7 14 8 Silty fine sand
12.0 9 11 17 Silty fine sand
13.5 13 16 15 Silty fine sand
Notes:
* The GWT level is 6.0 m below the ground surface.
* Assume an average n = 18.1 kN/m3 to GWT at depth 6 m, and sat = 19.7 kN/m3 for below GWT.
Problem #2: The Cone Penetration Test (CPT)
The results of a Cone Penetration Test are given in the table below. Using these test data,
a) Plot the CPT data including the friction ratio, fR.
b) Indicate the soil classification by depth.
c) Estimate angle of shearing resistance of the soil (‘) at depth 7.5 m using the graph given.
Depth qc qs fR Soil
(m) (Mpa) (kPa) (%) Classification
0.5 1.86 22.02
1.5 1.16 28.72
2.5 2.28 24.89
3.5 0.29 12.44
4.5 0.38 15.32
5.5 0.40 14.74
6.5 6.90 28.72
7.5 9.20 26.81
8.5 8.45 43.09
9.5 9.50 34.60
Note:
* Assume an average n = 16.5 kN/m3 to GWT at depth 3 m, and sat = 20 kN/m3 for below GWT.
