Praise be to god almighty for the blessings of his grace, and that we were given the
oppurtunity to be able to compile a working paper entitled “SKIMMING” is properly and
correctly, and on time.

This paper is structured so that readers can find out how important it is learn about
skimming . This paper was compiled with help from various parties. Both parties come from
outside and from the parties concerned itself. And because aid and help of god almighty,
these papers can be finally resolved.

Hopefully this paper can give a broader insight to the reader. Although this paper has
advantages and disadvantages.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the paper

In the world of education, reading activities are things that cannot be
abandoned. This is because most of the knowledge acquisition is done by students
through reading activities. When taking with an education program at school, reading
activities play a very important role. The ability to read fast is a skill to choose the
contents of a reading that must be read in accordance with the objectives that are
relevant to the reader without wasting time in pursuing other parts that are not needed.
Reading activities have a variety of reading techniques. The choice of reading
technique depends on the condition of the reading and the purpose of reading. There
are two kinds of speed reading techniques, namely reading skimming and scanning.
Reading skimming is a reading activity with the aim of finding the main idea of a
reading.

The purpose of this paper is to find out what is skimming.

THEORY AND DISCUSION

2.1 Definition of skimming

Skimming is a reading technique meant to look for main or general ideas in a text,
without going into detailed and exhaustive reading. In skimming, a reader reads only
important information, but not everything. Skimming is reading a text to get the gist, the
basic overall idea, rather than concetrating on absorbing all the details. For instance, many
people skim read a newspaper article just to get a quick overview, or a text could be
skimmed to see whether it’s worth reading in detail. Some understanding of skimming
according to experts :

1. Maria Mintowati
According to Maria Mintowati, reading at a glance is reading which makes our
eyes move quickly to see and pay attention to written material to find and get
information quickly.
2. Soedarso
Real understanding is a reading skill that is systematically arranged to get
efficient results, for various purposes.
3. Widiatmoko
States that skimming is a blend of motor skills (eye movements) or visual
abilities with one's cognitive abilities in reading.
4. Admin
Skimming is to read quickly to find out the general contents or parts of a
reading.
5. Tarigan
Skimming is a type of reading that makes our eyes move quickly to see, pay
attention to written material to find and obtain information.
6. Noer
According to the Noer, skimming is done to make a quick reading in general
in a reading material.
7. Santoso
According to the Santoso, basic skimming requests on the process that only
reads the key ideas or main thinking to get general information from reading or text
readed.

CONCLUSION

3.1 Conclusion

Skimming is a quick or quick reading to get information that includes finding

meaning and impression in a reading, with the process of reading jumping up and down,
looking at the main points of thought and understanding the big theme. Reading skimming is
very much needed by eye speed to read the entire most important part of reading

Skimming is often used when someone is in a library or bookstore, because it really

takes a short time and only reads the outside of books or book jackets, so it doesn't damage
the book
