Solar Energy Power Generation
How Do Solar Systems Produce Energy?
• Solar power is arguably the cleanest, most reliable
form of renewable energy available, and it can be
used in several forms to help power your home or
business.
• Solar-powered photovoltaic (PV) panels convert the
sun's rays into electricity by exciting electrons in
silicon cells using the photons of light from the sun.
This electricity can then be used to supply renewable
energy to your home or business.
How Do Solar Systems Produce Energy?
• Solar panels collect sunlight
– Photovoltaic cells in every solar panel take light or
photons, and turn them into electricity.
– PV Cells turn photons into direct current (DC) electricity.
How Do Solar Systems Produce Energy?
• Inverters convert solar power to usable electricity
– A single inverter (often called string inverter) converts DC
electricity into alternating current(AC) electricity.
– Some panels have microinverters attached behind them
– The inverter turns the DC electricity generated by the
solar panels into 120-volt AC that can be put to
immediate use by connecting the inverter directly to a
dedicated circuit breaker in the electrical panel.
How Do Solar Systems Produce Energy?
• Electricity is used in the home
– Electricity runs through the net meter.
– You’re still connected to traditional power companies via the grid if
the solar panels don’t produce enough energy , so you can
automatically draw more energy from your utility when you need.
How Do Solar Systems Produce Energy?
• Leftover electricity goes back to the grid
– It allows you to use as much electricity as you
need before sending any excess power back to
your utility company to use.
– Solar panels generate electricity when the sun is
up, but we use electricity at night too, when
we’re not producing solar power.
How Do Solar Systems Produce Energy?
• Electricity is measured by the net meter
– Net metering is when your local utility company agrees
to provide energy credits for any surplus power you
produce and send back to the grid.
– In some cases, these credits can roll over so you accrue
them long-term, and some utilities will even cut you a
check for your power production credits.
– The net meter measures the electricity going to and from
the grid. It is similar to the electric meter, but it measures
power going in two directions instead of just one.
Electricity Generation
• The amount of electricity a solar panel
produces depends on three important
factors:
– size of the panel
– efficiency of the solar cells inside
– amount of sunlight the panel gets
Production Square Feet

More solar cells= more power

Efficiency of Solar Panels

Combination of the efficiency of the cells with the size of the

panel, will produce a number called the power rating.
Solar Panel Rating
Solar Panel Rating
• a typical solar panel produces around 320 watts of power
• top 10 residential solar panels includes panels rated to
produce anywhere from 290 watts to 360 watts.
• Standard Test Condition(STC) rating indicates how much
power the solar panel will pump out during ideal conditions
– Test under ideal conditions or “peak sun” (1000 watts of sunlight per
square meter of surface)
