ANALYSIS ON THE MOVIE “MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM” (2013)

DIRECTED BY JUSTIN CHADWICK

Type of activity: open debate

Instructions: all students must research on all the questions posed in this document. On October
the 19th, they will watch the movie and, after this, the debate will be carried out. For the activity,
students will be divided in three groups; each group will develop 2 questions based on the
previous research and the information gotten from the movie; in this part, other groups can
complement answers with information that is relevant for the debate and that hasn’t been
mentioned by others. Then, new questions will be posed to all students and they will have to
develop their own arguments and to defend a position on them. Digital or printed material and
notes can be used to answer the questions during the activity.

1. When did Apartheid start in South Africa and which were the main reasons behind this process?

2. Explain the ethnic division in South Africa. Which are the main ethnic groups in the country, their
language and religion?

3. Who was Nelson Mandela from the racial, economic and political levels?

4. Explain the clash inside Mandela’s Guerrilla group. Which were the main reasons behind the division?

5. Which were the ideas and policies developed by Mandela that led to overcoming racial segregation in
South Africa?

6. What was the role of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in the success of the process of
overcoming Apartheid?
