DEC BEARING INSTALLATION
PROCEDURE
General Practices
• Leave bearings in original packaging until they are
ready to be heated.
• Clean all parts and make sure it is free of dust and
any preservative that might have been used on the
bearings or the shaft
• Make sure handling gloves are clean before picking
up the bearing
Radial Bearing Inner Race Installation
Using the SKF induction heater heat the inner
race of the radial bearing to 230-240 degrees F.

Push bearing onto shaft until it hits the shoulder

and hold there until it grips

(if you are unsure hold it for at least 1 minute).

Thrust Bearing Installation Procedure
5e, 4e
1. Heat the bearings to 230-240 Degrees F using SKF induction heater.
2. Push the first bearing onto the shaft till it hits the shoulder and hold until
they grip (if you are unsure hold it for at least 1 min) .
3. Repeat with the 2nd bearing; do not install bearings at the same time.
4. Let the bearing and shaft cool to ambient temperature (shop temperature)
5. Lightly hand pack the bearing with grease. (do not use a grease gun or
force too much grease into the bearing by hand as this will cause
overheating)
6. Install thrust nut hand tight (no wrench!) with fasteners with an even gap
between the nut and the bearing frame.
7. Measure the gap and make a shim pack that is 2 thousandths to 4
thousandths of an inch over your measured gap. Note: typical gap is 27
thousandths
8. Install thrust bearing cover with the shim pack.
Radial Bearing Installation
1. Install outer race and rollers into bearing frame.
2. Lightly hand pack bearing
(30 percent of free volume, do not over pack)
3. Install radial bearing cover plate. (if 4E assembly the radial bearing cover
plate is also the housing so the procedure is reversed, install the bearing
into the cover plate then into the bearing housing frame)
4. Install shaft in housing.
5. Check shaft end play after shaft is installed in bearing housing, should be
1.3 to 5 thousandths of an inch.
• If end play is too tight or too loose check shim pack and locknut and
adjust to achieve desired end play.
• Contact engineering if you have questions on this.
6. Check run out at impeller, should be under 4 thousandths.
7. Check concentricity at radial bearing end cap, should be under 4
thousandths.

Lubrication
The bearings should be re-greased with the pump running to allow the bearings to
centrifuge out old and excess grease. Grease life varies considerably and is dependent on
bearing size, type, rotational speed, operating temperature, and by the ingress of moisture,
gases and foreign matter.
Toyo generally recommends an initial re-grease interval not exceeding one month.
This interval may be lengthened or shortened at the discretion of an experienced operator.
If the bearings are frequently being splashed with liquid, the re-grease interval should not
exceed one week unless marine grease is being used.
Re-greasing intervals will vary depending on the installation. Generally, when the operating
temperature is over 80 C (176 F), the re-grease interval should be halved for every 15 C
(27  F) rise in operating temperature.

Belt Tensioning

Proper belt tensioning is very important to

the life of your pump. Overtightened belts
can shorten the life of the bearings in the
motor or the pump.
I recommend purchasing a Gates Tension
Tester (product no. 7401-0076) or some
similar product for checking tension.
