Standard 4

Instructional Delivery and Management

Component 4.a: Demonstrate verbal and nonverbal communication skills

that convey respect and sensitivity across all learning experiences

Artifact: Letter to Parent

Date: Fall 2018

Reflection:

The artifact that I chose to reflect on is the parent letter from PED 356, Adapted Physical Education. I
was instructed to write a letter to the parents of the student who I was assigned to teach for the
adapted 12-week program. At the end of this 12-week program I was responsible for providing my
students’ parents with an informational letter based on how well the student demonstrated the
psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domain. As well as what the student should work on in order to
further better themselves
I chose to connect this artifact with standard 4 because I believe it is very important to stay in contact
with your students’ parent before, during, and after a program, lesson, unit, and/or semester.
Effectively communicating with a student’s parents will ensure that growth development will remain
consistent outside of the classroom. In addition to the letter I made sure to always have a discussion
with my students’ parent after each lesson on how well my student behaved and performed each task.
I believe the connection between this artifact and standard four to be important for my development as
a teacher because demonstrating an adequate means of communication is very important in order to
become an effective teacher, especially when it pertains to communicating with parents. A
characteristic that one must portray in order to be looked at as a professional is the ability to properly
communicate with others. As a teacher, one must make themselves easily accessible, to the parents or
the students, so they can provide any type of additional support or assistance that would be needed for
a student to become successful.
