From Cleveland to Clinton....

101 years of memories

In 1895 Grover Cleveland was president, Kellogg’s introduced cornflakes,

motion pictures debuted in New York City, Stephen Crane wrote the Red
Badge of Courage, the first U.S. pizza parlor opened and Andy Hutera and
his twin sister were born on Pittsburgh’s Northside.

One hundred and one years have passed, eighteen presidents have come
and gone, but Andy is still with us on our SGH Skilled Nursing Unit ,
chewing tobacco and enjoying life.

Andy has always had plenty of spunk.

Christened at St. Elizabeth’s Church on Penn Avenue, Andy attended St.

Francis church and school as a young man. At age 19 he worked in a local
cigar factory, and then spent most of his career as a steelworker for
Pittsburgh Screw & Bolt.

Active his entire life, Andy mowed his lawn until his mid ‘90’s. Then, at age
95, Andy had an accident while repairing his roof and fell. Andy likes to joke
that a twister must have knocked him off.

This slowed him down a bit.

But the accident was not enough to stop Andy from walking daily. From age
18 up until age 98, Andy walked an average of five miles every day through
the neighborhood...singing.

Giving a sly grin, Andy says he quickly figured out that singing on his jaunts
was a great way to meet the ladies. Andy claims he knew all the hit songs
back in his courting days. Over 200 tunes.
Andy found a smart way to exercise. It was on one of his walking
serenades, that he met and captured the heart of his wife of over 62 years,
Ann.

Andy confides that his memory is a little foggy these days, admitting he
may have forgotten the lyrics to a few songs. But, as a happy resident of
SGH’s Skilled Nursing Unit, he is still singing for fellow residents, visitors
and staff.

Today, at 101, Andy has surpassed his personal goal of living 100 years.
He is now setting new goals. On his birthday when his wife mentioned he
was shooting for 104 years, Andy piped in, “124!”. Suburban General is
looking forward to spending those years together with Andy.

Why not drop by to check out SGH’S Skilled Nursing Unit and pay Andy a
visit? He promises to serenade you with not just one, but two verses of
“You Are My Sunshine”.

It will be an experience you won’t forget!
