Monument and Historical Sets

Hallische Händel-Ausgabe (Kritische Gesamtausgabe)
Halle Handel Edition (Critical Edition)

 The edition includes critical commentary in every volume.1

 Bibliography and notes are not included in the edition. However, it includes performance
directions and decoration (ornament) suggestions.
 Some volumes include English Foreword. (Interestingly Messiah has only German preface as it
was published before 1992)
 Publisher: George Frederic Handel Society in collaboration Bärenreiter Verlag, Kassel.
 Editorial Board: Walther-Siegmund-Schultze/Halle (Saale)
 First volume was published at 1955. The edition is scheduled to finish at 2023.2
 Works are arranged in five series:3
o Series I Oratorio and large Cantatas
o Series II Operas
o Series III Church Music
o Series IV Instrumental Music
o Series V Small Vocal Works
Each work is usually included in a volume. However, a major work might be separated into a
few volumes.
 Interesting point: The editors did specify that these editions though scholarly still subject to
their understanding and preferences on Händel’s music as they try to get as close to Händel’s
original intent of his music.

Monument and Historical Sets

Denkmaler der Tonkunst in Österriech - DTÖ
(Monument to the art of sound in Austria)

 Composers included in this edition: Frank Joseph Haydn, Johannes Brahms, Gustav Mahler,
Richard Strauss and Joseph Marx.4
 Guido Alder initiated DTÖ to include the works of the composers in the German-speaking region
(formerly Transleithanian Monarchy). When the monarchy ends, the society for the publication
of monuments of musical art transitioned into a country-centric society.5
 The society published “scientifically flawless editions” (critical editions).6
 This series would be helpful for musicians and researchers who are into studying the trend of
Germanic region and wish to attain music scores that might not be available through the major
publishers.
 Interesting point: This series is a good gateway for exploring German-speaking composers
whose name might not appeared in music history books but was still relevant to the music scene
then.
