Goal 1: improve in engaging with organizations or communities in a reciprocal


learning/teaching situation that applies and generates knowledge for the direct benefit of
external audience by working towards completion of my pediatric specialization project
Steps:
1. Acquire and search for resources in Columbus
a. Research hospital based resources
b. Research community based resources
2. Acquire and search for resources in Cincinnati
a. Research hospital based resources
b. Research community based resources
3. Search for resources available in communities across the nation
a. Try to identify a “gold-standard” program already in place
4. Collaborate with a national organization (potentially March of Dimes) or community
organization to create/implement a program that serves this population
a. If a program is already in place in the community, reach out and see if there is an
opportunity for me to assist or ask them what their needs are
My project is focusing on at risk/low income families who have or have had a child in the NICU
and what community supports they need.

Goal 2: improve in managing my emotions in difficult or stressful situations through


mindfulness strategies and yoga
Steps:
1. Participate in yoga at least once a week
2. Create a list of mindfulness strategies that will work for me
3. Put this list in a place where I will see it every day to remind myself to incorporate these
strategies when I am feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

The first goal was chosen because I have limited experience in this area. I realized I can work
towards this goal through my pediatric specialization. Looking into different organizations will
provide me the opportunity to get connected with them. While I am unsure of where my
research will take me, either direction will provide me with the opportunity to meet this goal.
By working towards this goal, I will be able to identify areas of improvement and areas of
strength. The second goal was chosen because this is an area of weakness for me. I often let my
emotions take control, especially in stressful and difficult situations. I typically get very
frustrated in these situations. Incorporating mindfulness and calming strategies when I feel
stressed with school or work will allow me to generalize and use them when this happens in
fieldwork. A domain of strength for me is relationships with others. I get along easily with
others and am sensitive/empathetic to their feelings/situation. I believe I can use this to
improve in my areas of weakness. This would mainly occur through open communication. By
communicating with others, they can help me in stressful situation or point me in a new
direction. This will help me make strides in reaching both of these goals in 9 months.
